Natural support for bereavement and grief with homeopathy

in #health7 years ago (edited)

The loss of a loved one can be almost unbearably painful and devastating. This kind of raw pain, deep felt and life altering loss is not something a person ever recovers from completely. Time often eases the intensity of the grief, making it possible to adjust to the new reality of living in the absence of the loved one.

Homeopathic remedies can be a great support during the first phase of emotional and physical pain associated with the grieving process. A well chosen homeopathic medicine can help ease the often constant companion of emotional and physical pain. It will help calm you mind and body to help you feel more relaxed and able to get the rest and sleep you need.

Homeopathic medicines (remedies) are chemical free, and free of side-effects. They are gentle and safe to take for children, as well as pregnant and nursing women.

Acute and long standing grief

Acute grief and intensely felt long standing grief are experienced with similar symptoms.

Long standing grief (chronic grief) refers to a persistent form of bereavement that dominates a person’s life, interfering with daily functioning for an extended period of time. When symptoms are persisting without improvement and you feel stuck in grief, unable to return to routine activities, you may want to seek help to heal with homeoapthy. Homeopathy supports your body in healing without numbing or suppressing your feelings.

There are hundreds of homeopathic remedies that may be indicated for grief. The remedy that will help you is chosen based on your individual symptoms and unique experience.

The following are some of the more frequently indicated homeopathic remedies for acute and long standing grief:

Aconite
For the initial shock of hearing bad and traumatizing news.

Ignatia
There is perhaps no homeopathic remedy more often indicated in a case of acute, recent and long standing grief than Ignatia. Ignatia is the first remedy to consider in the case of emotional shock, whether it be the loss of a loved one, the breakup of a friendship, or romantic relationship, the loss of a job, or any sort of disappointment or trauma. The person needing Ignatia may change between hysterical sobbing, to bottling up emotions, and involuntary sighing. Mood swings changing at from one moment to the next, from joking and laughing, to crying and sadness. A person needing Ignatia often complain about the feeling of a lump in the throat. Headaches with a pain as if a nail were driven into the head.

Natrum muriaticum
Natrum mur. is another frequently indicated remedy used for grief. Those needing this remedy are often sad, melancholy and cry often. They may look like a a person needing the remedy Pulsatilla, but unlike Pulsatilla, Natrum muriaticum patients generally avoid consolation of any kind. They tend to bottle everything up inside, often unable to cry, grief felt as a lump in the throat. If they cry they prefer to cry and grief when alone, any attempt by others to comfort them are often rejected with anger or embarrassment. The less typical response is that they will weep freely, but still reject consolation when offered. People needing this remedy often feel worse from 10-11 am, and have a great aversion to the heat of the sun. They often have a strong craving for salty food.

Phosphoric acid
This homeopathic remedy is called for less frequently in grief, but do keep it in mind. People needing this remedy tend to suffer more the chronic effects of grief and look exhausted and gray. The grief seems to be more deeply rooted than in cases calling for the remedy Ignatia. The patient often feels extremely exhausted and can experience profound indifference. They crave juicy and refreshing things, especially fruit.

Pulsatilla
Think of this remedy in cases where the patient is inclined to silent grief with much weeping. The person needing this remedy is typically mild, gentle, yielding, and clingy – and weeps very easily. They can’t talk about their problems without crying. Unlike natrum muriaticum patients, pulsatilla patients like to be comforted. In general, a pulsatilla patient tends to be warm blooded, dislikes a warm room, feel better in cool open air and has physical symptoms that seem to shift about. They are generally thirst less.

Dosage instruction
Take one pill or pellet of the best matching remedy every 30 minutes to 4 hours (30 minutes for intense symptoms, 4 hours for milder ones). Once improvement is noticed, stop dosing and repeat the remedy only if symptoms return. If there is no improvement by three doses, choose a different remedy or seek professional help to find the right remedy for you.
