5 Ways to detox the body, plus a few bonuses.

1 – Water

Hydration is key. Everyone says it, yet no one seems to listen. Our bodies are 70% (approximately) made up of water, so it should be no surprise that keeping your body well hydrated is key to flushing toxins. The kidneys are the big players here, eliminating waste through your urine. So drink up!

2 – Green Tea

Green Tea is full of polyphenols, tannins, and antioxidants that not only cleanse the body but have potent health benefits, including anti cancerous properties.

3 – Raw, Dark Green Vegetables.

Kale, broccoli, sprouts, spinach, the list of goodies goes on. Far from the vile weeds described by Newman in Seinfeld, a diet high in cruciferous vegetables can reduce cancer risk, and are crucial staples of a high health diet.

4 – More Sleep.

This one might surprise some people. Missing out on sleep increases a number of mortality risks, as well as making the body incredibly inefficient at pretty much everything compared to its well rested state. More sleep allows the body more time to perform vital functions, which aids the kidneys, liver, and digestive/endocrine system to reduce toxins in the body.

5 – Don’t Take Them In!

A little logic here. The less baddies you take in, ie alcohol, coffee, sugar….All the good stuff! The less toxins your body has to eliminate. I’m not saying avoid them completely, but moderation is definitely key.

Take it to the next level.

If you really want to ramp up the detoxification process, I highly recommend implementing one of my favourite tools into your life.

The Sauna.

I usually meet two kinds of people, the kinds that love saunas and then the ones that think us sauna lovers are complete nut jobs.
It’s true, sitting in a very hot room, with very dry air, can be a little confronting for some, claustrophobic for others, and downright torturous for a few. Despite this, the way a sauna heats the body to bring sweat pouring out of your pores (word play wink wink) is unsurpassed.
Saunas are a much better idea in most cases than a steam room, mainly because bacteria can’t live in a sauna. The dry heat offers no habitable living conditions, where as a steam room which stays mostly wet and rarely above the 65-70C degrees, offers very favourable living conditions. This is not the case in a well looked after steam room, but this author is yet to find one.

A good starting point for saunas is two 10 minute sessions, with a five minute break between. Build this up to two sessions of 20 minutes with a 10 minute break and you’re really cranking up the heat! A session like this will leave you feeling refreshed, clean, and energised!

NOTE – DRINK LOTS OF WATER. BUY A 2 LITRE BOTTLE OF WATER AND CONSUME IT ALL WHILST IN THE SAUNA. A little side note here is that as well as keeping you hydrated, all of that water flushing through your system helps eliminate the nasty toxins!

  • Warning. (You may or not find the sauna full of men like this, they can however be good quality for banter and story telling alike.)

I will do a later post on some other techniques for cleansing the body, such as green smoothies, yoga flows and poses, more hot and cold methods, as well as removing ‘thought toxins’ from the mind.
