An Apple A Day

in #health7 years ago

Everyone knows the statement: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!" The saying originated in the early 1860s; however, the original saying sounded a bit different but the meaning was the same indicating that healthy diet, including apples, are good for humans and keep them in healthy state. Specifically, the original saying said "Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.”

The phrase has not originated from out of the blue. Instead, people in the past as well as modern researchers and dietitians have concluded based on their observations and research that people did stay healthier when they consumed apples on a daily basis.

In fact, researches concluded that eating an apple a day reduces bad cholesterol in the blood and thereby may assist in prevention of strokes. That is not to say eating an apple a day will most definitely keep all doctors away, but statistics have shown that healthy diets (in addition to exercise, of course) will keep an individual on healthier level for longer period of his life.

While reading articles about benefits of apples for human health, I learned that apparently apples contain quercetin which protects the lining of blood vessels and as a result protects people from acquiring or progressing of cardiovascular disease.

A couple of interesting facts about apples is that they assist in prevention of diabetes because they contain low level of sugar (hypoglycemic food), as well as being active in prevention of cancers due to high levels of antioxidants in apples.

One might consider taking a dose of multivitamins instead of real fruits; however, that is not a solution to a healthy diet. It's been shown again and again that fruits in their natural state as they were created are no comparison to artificial vitamins from a bottle. Furthermore, real and natural fruits contain a significant amount of fiber which assists with digestive system.

Thank you! Let's all eat apples and be healthy :)

Lol, I love it. I literally carry a bag of apples around with me everywhere I go. I'm kinda of weird with my diet though... I go to the market before work and usually only eat fruits and vegetables throughout the day. I even planted a whole bunch of trees this last year in hopes to get the most organic as possible. Great article!
