WATER....ARE YOU ABSORBING WHAT YOU'RE DRINKING?
Water! Agua! Aqua! H2O!
We’ve all heard it many times before drink water, drink water, I preach it to my clients and loved ones all the time…. Yet still I think it’s easier said than done, here in Bali I’ve noticed that I drink a lot of water yet am getting symptoms of dehydration like headaches and muscle cramps …. WHAT?! How is this even possible I mean I’m drinking a lot of water. It comes down to absorption really and this isn’t something we talk much about!
There’s a big difference between drinking water and actually absorbing water (hydrating). We are getting much better at trying to drink more water, but unfortunately we’re not absorbing much of it at all because we don’t have the essential minerals, electrolytes, and salts to keep it in the system. But we’re peeing often and it’s clear, that’s good right? Well it’s a good ting that it’s clear BUT peeing often means you are simply flushing your system and not allowing the body to actually absorb the essential minerals that the body needs.
Well dang it right!
The way our body absorbs water is like a highway. The gate that lets water into our cells is mineral based. In other words, what is not in our water may be the problem. I know tap water sucks. It’s like trying to drink out of your swimming pool. And, to make matters worse, bottled water has nothing in it, it’s all stripped out. Bottled water is reverse osmosis water which actually tests out around the pH of a cola beverage, in most cases – which is very acidic.
We can help with this by adding a pinch of Himalayan salt to our water, or adding in minerals which can be bought at a health food store… adding salt is the easiest!
Another form of ensuring you’re absorbing water is eating water… wait how do you eat water?
Simple you add fruits and vegetables that contain water, most fruits and vegetables contain water but there are a certain few that contain more. Watermelon is an obvious one, there’s also celery, cucumbers, zucchini, apples all types of melons you can eat all the water you want and really help stay hydrated because unlike tap or bottled water the fruit and vegetables comes jam packed with eh essential nutrients that we need in order to absorb the water and stay properly hydrated.
So I’m also aware that we don’t all have the time to eat fresh fruit and vegetables or we live in places where its not fresh and easily accessible so in tis case I would recommend adding a pinch of Himalayan salt because to the water because it is full of ionic minerals and it is not sodium dominant. You can also add an ionic trace mineral liquid to clean, non-chlorinated water this gives a good ionic mineral balance which will enhance water absorption in the body.
Just remember that if water can’t get into our cells, wastes and garbage can’t get out. By applying these simple tools the benefits you can reap are huge – our bodies can clean themselves, our skin improves, our mood improves, our energy level picks up, our bowels become more regular and we get rid of stagnant water from our system. Sounds like an increase in overall health and well- being.
That’s my water rant :)
Again, interesting! I know what you mean with this (for both food and water) and I can miss this aspect in all the health discussions out there. It's not so simple as to just drink or eat, we need to know that we absorb it as well.
Are you a health professional or just self-educated (not meant as a bad thing)?
I'm a holistic nutritionist and have been in the health and wellness industry for just over 10 years ... I also teach yoga, breath work ... Yes water it's an interesting one, so is food in general in a world where everyone can get on line and make something look appealing more and more people are following advice that confuses them ... I also am a firm believer and teach how to connect with your own body to see what it wants, needs and likes. Again in this day in age we are so bombarded with distractions that we are completely disconnected from our bodies!
Absorption is so important I see it with clients all the time taking a million supplements because they ready they were good but not educating them selves enough to know not only what their bodies need but also that some supplements counteract with other ones and it's all just a bug waste and can wreak havoc on the liver.
