When I found out about this particular superfood I was in shock that I didn't know about this before,
as it had so many healthy properties that I was just in awe.
It is called Shilajit, or Mumio and it is much older than you and I.

  • How Did Mumio form?

Many millions of years ago when Russia and Asia were still apart and started moving closer to each other,
it was only the ocean in between them.
So all the minerals, living organisms and bacteria from the bottom of the ocean starting climbing to the surface when these two giants (Russia and Asia) came together.
Together Russia and Asia formed the Altai mountains.

It is in those mountains along with the Himalaya and Tibet mountains,
in which those living organisms, bacteria and minerals mixed with the high altitude,
plus being trapped inside the mountain stone, over time formed Shilajit.
The brown to black tar-like goo that is packed with atleast 85 minerals etc.

  • The Usage of Shilajit Today

Shilajit has been used in Ayurveda, the ancient and traditional Indian medicine system.
Even today, since it has many anti-cancer and endocrine, immune, and health-boosting properties,
it is being used and recommended by many hollistic doctors, and others who boycot the regular pharmaceutical industry.

Shilajit contains over 85 minerals in ionic form, triterpenes, and humic acids.
It is also considered to be the best natural antioxidant known to us.

Shilajit also stimulates the growth of new skin on the cellular levels, and improves overall soft-tissue regeneration.
That makes it perfect to help people who are struggling to get over big wounds, or making it an aid in healing internal smaller wounds (under the supervision of a doctor ofcourse)

People also swear that it improves hormonal balance, and as such helps women with issues in menopause and also helps older men improve their overall quality of life and because of the testosterone reuptake they gain, makes them also happier (testosterone declination over the years can cause severe depression).

In the fitness industry in the recent times it has also seen a rise in popularity, especially as it has been shown to improve cellular regeneration, as mentioned before, which is perfect for athletes who need aid in healing torn muscles or tendons.
That is how I actually got to know it.

  • Shelf-Life and Storage

Shilajit is usually kept in dark and after being packed and purified of additives, it has a shelf-life of around 5 years, after that it starts losing potency.
A lot of the cheap Shilajit today is fake, and I would trust only Russian sources, coming directly from the Altai mountains.

  • Summary

This article has been kept relatively short, but in terms of making this a general introduction to Shilajit, I think I did cover the fundamentals, the uses of this "food of the gods" reach far over the horizon, and I think if more people knew about this earlier, it would have saved them a lot of time and money, and trials and errors than dealing with the pharmaceutical industry.

There will be upcoming posts from people with real-life experiences with Shilajit.

That's it from me for today and I hope you like this post about this unusual natural superfood we call Shilajit!
