Why I DELETED Facebook and you Should Too

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Reason #1: Depression. The science is clear, according to multiple studies people who spend more time on Facebook suffer higher rates of depression than those who spend less time on Facebook.

Reason #2: Low Self-Esteem. A recent University study found that Facebook usage had a significant negative relationship with self-esteem. Users who spend more time on Facebook had lower self-esteem. If you want to boost your self-esteem get off Facebook.

Reason #3: Life Satisfaction. Another study found that the more a person used Facebook, the more their life satisfaction levels declined and the more they actually interacted with people in the real world, the more their life satisfaction levels rose.

Reason #4: Comparison and Inadequacy. Users that spend more time on social media also report greater feelings of inadequacy over users that spend less time online. We all know that our friends with the most problems often post how great their lives and relationships are in perfectly edited photos. People with the most problems often post perfected curated and worded posts to over compensate for things they are lacking or shortfalls in their relationships. Happy couples online are not necessarily happy couples in real life. Do not compare yourself to others, people are not on vacation year round and often have far more problems than they let on in social media.

Reason #5: Loneliness and Over-Sharing. Another study found that users that post too much, share personal information and intimate moments describe themselves as more lonely than users that share less. Also, we don't want to see 20 posts of your dog or cat, what you are having for lunch, or 2 daily posts on your baby. Many people share way too much online.

Reason #6: Lost Time and Distraction. Social media consumes hours of peoples days and are a constant distraction throughout the day. Useless posts and notifications can distract you from your job or work as well as real human interaction. Average Millennial social media use is now over 6 hours per day!!!

Reason #7: Relationship Strain. Facebook has destroyed many relationships by people connecting with past relationships and leading to affairs. It also can also be a strain on friendships and other connections. People that compare their relationships and friendships to others often have feelings of inadequacy which can hurt relationships. We all have friends who use social media to stir up drama in friendships and relationships and just be sad pathetic individuals.

Reason #8: Political Posts. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We don't want to hear about your political views and NO you aren't going to convince someone to vote a certain way by arguing politics with them online for the whole world to see. 90% of Millennials now get their news and politics from Facebook.

Reason #9: Anxiety and Concentration. Social media apps such as Facebook are now designed like slot machines in Vegas to keep your attention by sending you those little red push notifications throughout the day in perfectly timed moments to keep you hooked and actively visiting the site. Whether it be a notification your friend just posted, a live video, a birthday notification, or that Sarah is interested in going to an event near you this week. All these notifications are designed to get you spending time on Facebook. It is now understood that these quick glances at social media throughout the day can permanently reduce your capacity for concentration. With the rise of social media and smart phone use on campuses and Universities, anxiety related disorders and prescriptions have been on the the rise and are now at all time high.

Reason #10: Privacy. Facebook collects and sells your personal information, likes, interests, and personal location information on where you have been or where you would like to visit. Facebook is profiting off you and the content you put on the site, that is why this company is now valued at over $500 billion or half a trillion dollars! If you value privacy, delete Facebook and stop allowing them to profit off you. There is a site called https://steemit.com where they pay you to post and do not sell your personal information. Additional note on privacy: if you have location services enabled on your phone, anyone can determine exactly where you are or where a posted photo was taken to the exact GPS geo-tagged coordinates embedded in that photo.

Reason #11: Censorship. Facebook has been caught actively censoring and removing posts around the world. German chancellor Angela Merkel and Mark Zuckerberg were recently caught on an open mike discussing suppression of "anti-immigration" posts.. and he replied that he was "already working on it." Facebook has admitted that they are actively targeting and removing posts deemed "hate speech" or "fake news". As an openly left leaning organization, this is a dangerous slope we are going down for free speech around the world.

OK! I will not use Facebook. But Removing is difficult.

Yes! I absolutely agree with this post. Facebook is something that causes people to be miserable because of the constant comparison and endorphins release. Let's break ourselves from this shackle, and move on to a better, healthier life. Kudos to this post!

I agree, but the 'grammar Nazi' in me got hung up on the TWO # 3's

Noted, that has been corrected. Thanks!

You're very welcome. I have volunteered to be a proofreader for folks, but I tend to be too picky. Stuff like that jumps out at me.
Nice post @rmiseman

I have a Facebook account still, but I use it pretty much just to share Steemit articles I like. Other than that I don't do much with the site. A few years ago it was a different story. I would spend a great deal of time on Facebook and get feeling run down, edgy, depressed...the works. Since I've become more of a long distance user and rarely look at the site, I feel a whole lot better. :-)

Very interesting post 👏 I agree with alot you have to say 👍. Peace out @crypto-expo

Well written article! I love Facebook, it was bootcamp for the mind for a few years but I learned a lot about myself and people and it is still a great place to connect with my friends and family. Tools, technology and social networks all depend on how we use them. And no doubt we need to master them rather than allow them to control us. Thanks for sharing, I will upvote and look forward to reading more of your posts. Excellent job!

Nice and very detailed. Upvoted and following.

been goin to falsebook only for news feed but recently after I discovered steemit I barely go there and got a feeling I won't in the long run..but am keeping the account for personal history and maybe that "Zuck" will throw some free money at the users lol... yeaaa i once posted picture for lack of affection ehhhh I was depressed and falsebook didn't help...now I can say to it ... "ZUCK IT TO ME ONE TIME"

I deleted my facebook because of the exact same reason you posted. I was so depressed!!!! Seeing my ex's with someone new made me sad, and I've lost friends because of political posts.
