Trying to eat healthy in a society of consumerism

in #health8 years ago (edited)

Nowadays, people that live in big cities rarely know whats on their plates. And why does this happen?

Well, first of all, most of us probably live in a capitalist society where it is still hard to find companies that value costumer well being over profit. And the propaganda that's made around the food we eat doesn't help for genuine solutions in eating habits. So how can we change this?

Buy from local businesses

Buying from local businesses ensure that you know what you are buying by talking to the producers themselves. You don't have the opportunity to make this kind of approach if you buy your products from the supermarket. Although I'm not a fan of eating meat (especially red meats), i recognize that livestock that's been grown in a healthy environment won't hurt you as much.

The thing that's making our food so unhealthy is the way that the livestock is grown, and i recommend you to see a documentary called Earthlings if you're interested in this subject. Basically, every possible cruel thing is done, from putting live cattle piled up on trucks, which creates desease and bad living conditions for the beings there, to separating calfs from their moms one week or less after they are born, which leads me to my next topic

Don't get fooled by advertisement

If you really want to accept the truth about the food that goes in our plates, you will realize that the milk that your parents said was good for you at least once a day or so maybe wasn't worth it.

But what could you do? The system leads people into miseducating their children. Okay, maybe you couldn't do anything at the time, but you can now, and that is change to what you think is the best for you.

Do your own research on the type of diet that you want to adopt

With diet, I don't mean eating less, but the kind of things that you eat. You probably can get a couple of lists on the internet that inform you of various foods/recipes and where they benefit you the most (for example if i'm not wrong, beans are rich in iron).

Ideally you wanna have a balanced diet. And this doesn't you need the completely give up on that succulent burguer. Diversification is the key
