Hypertension is defined as persistent high blood pressure, usually diagnosed after three consecutive measurements of high blood pressure.

Know your NUMBERS!!!

Your BP is HIGH when:

More than 140 upper level.
More than 90 lower level.

  • Follow up with doctor is required.

Your BP is Approaching HIGH RISK when:

130 - 139 upper level.
86 - 89 lower level.

  • Recheck in 1 year.
  • Begin Lifestyle Changes to prevent full blown hypertension.

Your BP at a HEALTHY RANGE when:

90 - 120 upper level.
60 - 90 lower level.

  • Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle.

Research says Rise in Blood Pressure accounts for 7.5 million deaths worldwide.

There are Controllable and Uncontrollable Risk Factors. Lets views some;

Uncontrollable Risk Factors:

  • Family History.
  • Black/African descent.
  • Genetic Makeup.
  • Age.

Controllable Risk Factors:

  • Obesity.
  • Smoking.
  • Alcohol.
  • Diet high in salt, fat, sugar.

Prevention
Preventing Hypertension is basically moderation of dietary intake of Carbohydrates, Fat, Salt, Sugar, etc.
Engage regularly in physical activities, and monitoring of BP regularly especially if there is a family history.

Treatment
Treatment of Hypertension usually lifestyle modification at first, if that doesn't work, medications are added. Once a person is placed on hypertensive drugs, the person must continue with the drugs for life.

Hypertension affects both young and old.
