Good post, there are many aspects to this, including the very high social pressure to perform in Japan.

How does one perform better or more than his peers ? by working more hours and producing more. Eventually, people burn out.

It is similar pressure that sadly drives suicides rates high among students.

I think the suicide rate in students equates to family pressure and financial burden being put on kids, at an early stage to succeed to uplift families from poverty.
People forget that quantity over quality will sometimes never work, you must use your creativity to reduce the number of hours, whilst performing in an optimal condition. Something that the Japanese corporate culture hasn't accepted yet.
