Her parents had been dining at a nearby restaurant when they returned to find their daughter missing, sparking a massive international search and countless unconfirmed sightings. Her disappearance and the treatment of her parents at the hands of the UK media lead to an inquiry into press standards in the UK. A review of her case was launched in 2011, and in July 2013, the office in charge stated they had 38 persons of interest and believed Madeleine may still be alive
