A Surge In Interest For Growing Industrial Hemp

in #hemp7 years ago

A growing number of farmers are hoping that they can turn to industrial hemp to try and open up new markets for themselves, to try and make more money for them and their families, and to try and diversify their rotation.

Seminars are being held around the country, with many people who are dedicated to teaching those in their community about the benefits that can come along with embracing industrial hemp. This requires investing the time and money to go about educating people on the thousands of different products that hemp could be used to help produce.

Hemp can be used to make things like paper, rope, clothing, construction materials, and it's a great source of plant-based protein. Unsurprising, there are many people who refer to hemp as a superfood, because of all of the nutritional benefit that it has to offer.

A great deal of farmers could benefit from being able to grow this crop and not only them, but people themselves who value the products could also benefit.

And right now there are a growing number of states that have initiated hemp research growing projects; in places like Kentucky, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Farmers in the US right now are heavily restricted from growing industrial hemp freely, as they see fit, there as there are some rigid guidelines in place that they must first meet.

There have been various legislative efforts put forth over the years that have tried to make it easier for farmers to start selling their industrial hemp commercially, however.

It is clear that there is a lot of confusion surrounding industrial hemp and the legality of growing it and getting hemp-based products to market.

However, you can clearly see the growing popularity and advance from farmers who are interested to get into this space. Though, they still say that strong markets have yet to be developed, but there is a lot of potential however, and that has people excited.

There is a lot of room for potential, as in 2016 the US hemp market was estimated to be worth almost $700 million. There are also current legislative efforts taking place that are seeking to try and have commercial hemp markets further established in places like Tennessee, Indiana, and elsewhere.

The "rulemakers" really need to get over themselves soon! This is one of the greatest most useful sustainable plants on the planet. Unlike bamboo (which I also love) it can grow virtually everywhere and it's super resistant to bugs and diseases. I don't think most people realize just how widely used hemp actually WAS in the US, before all that marijuana legislation in the 1930s...

So what are they afraid of? That farmers are going to "mix in" the intoxicant version in their fields?

Hemp is just such a versatile crop. Which other plant can be used to make such a diverse range of products? And once more people get acquainted with the countless benefits of its medicinal cousin... well, that's going to make the world a better (and happier) place. 😉

Hemp is such a versatile material. It would be stupid not to utilize it.

I remember hemp was banned because it came from the same plant that weed comes from... which is weird seems every source I've seen has demonstrated that the plant has a lot of utility.

Great to be back! I missed my steemit, I missed your posts! Galapagos was great. But my goodness I was going through internet and steemit withdrawals for almost two weeks! Was terrible! Thanks for still up-voting my work that I had going up on steem.auto post.

I see you are still pumping out one great article after another. I did not know how thing are taking off in the hemp market. I recall back in the day of George Washington Hemp was a regular crop. Then the "bigs" outlawed it forcing the country into what was more profitable for them. To see the regulations coming and off and the industry growing makes me happy. Now that is some progress I can get behind. Plus I love eating hemp seed. Talk about a super nutritious food, stuff is incredible like you mention full of protein and other great stuff.

Anyway I'm back to a place where I have internet that runs faster than 30k/s lol. So I'll be around. Hope you are well! -Dan

galapagos? what an incredible trip that'd be!! ✈ thanks for stopping by man

The day it is legalized here....I am growing it tall and growing it often!

One of my fav smoothie topping ;) Let's hope they keep it organic and non-GMO.

Fun fact, out of the thousands of crops grown in the us, there are only 10 that are GMO in the US. In many, if not most cases, there is zero need to genetically modify a crop. Selective breeding and human influince has done all we need to do. GMO is a tool in the tool box, but the media has made a spin that everything is becoming GMOs and we should all be afraid. When in reality, there are only a few that are used, mostly for non human eating/consumption. GMOs arent the enemy, "Non-Organic" isnt the enemy, its the media that spins everything into a fear based ratings machine. There are bad practices by bad companies, and they should be delt with, but the Technology and Science is sound.

You are right about that! In my dark past, I worked for one of those bad companies as a plant biologist. I have seen their power and I agree that media isn't helping. There is indeed nothing wrong with GMO.... they are actually the same thing as a hybrid, it just takes more generations to create a hybrid..... but it's all the chemicals and seed sterility and ripping off framers that comes with it... bad bad bad industry.

Last time I checked the DEA always interefered whenever a state tried to legalise hemp. Even when they were not busting anyone growing weed for smoking they cracked down on one guy who said he was going to grow hemp. Therapeutic cannabis is of course a major threat to the drug and gambling and alcohol industries and they of course push back hard but legal hemp is a threat to the oil industry and that is where the real money is.

important to know that every day there are new things that help us survive and have new ideas for survival
