| Today I like to show you this very old postcard from the town of Verviers in the eastern part of Belgium. Until the 1950ies the town was an important industrial center of the wool industry, because the water of the Weser river (not to be confused with the river of same name in Germany!) that flows through Verviers has a very low content of lime which was ideal to wash wool. Unfortunately I don't know the exact time the photo was taken, but judging by the pictured means of transportation it should be more or less 100 years old. | Heute möchte ich Euch diese sehr alte Postkarte aus der Stadt Verviers in Ostbelgien zeigen. Bis in die 1950er Jahre war die Stadt ein wichtiges industrielles Zentrum der Wollindustrie, da das Wasser des Flusses Weser (nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Fluss gleichen Namens in Deutschland!) wegen seines sehr niedrigen Kalkgehaltes zum Waschen von Wolle besonders gut geeignet war. Leider weiß ich nicht, wann genau das Foto gemacht wurde, aber den abgebildeten Transportmitteln nach zu urteilen, sollte es in etwa 100 Jahre alt sein. |
