Captured By The Apache: A Treaty Is Made And The Army Stays At The Village

in #history6 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas! We're in a series about the Wild West and the story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

This is not a pro-Indian nor a pro-white man story. Both sides committed atrocities. The Apache were being decimated by the loss of their main food, shelter and clothing source, the buffalo, and they were being hunted by the army so they were on a war footing and fighting for their very existence. To them it was kill or be killed.

They hated the white man for all the destruction and death he had brought to them. But this story is being told from a white boy's perspective while living with the Apache. This ain't no Little House On The Prairie tale, this is a chunk of gritty, hard reality from those turbulent, often violent times.

In the last post Hermann had been raiding his old neighborhood with his tribe and part of his group had killed whites but he still hasn't had to do that directly.

However, the last fight they had before returning home was with some cowboys and two of them were killed. Hermann didn't say if he had a part in that or not.

Today's story

At any rate, the next raiding party went out and Hermann stayed in camp. When the chief, his so-called adopted father, returned he had two white scalps hanging from his belt and said that two families had been killed. They also captured and brought a young white boy with them.

Just like the other white boy from the last post Hermann didn't say how the boy was treated. Changes were happening though. The tribe made a treaty with the United States government and soldiers would show up and stay at their camp for days at a time.

I'd never heard of the Army doing that. I'd always read that the soldiers would show up and force a move to a reservation, not come and stay at the village. That sounds very risky.

It's always scary when the Feds show up

Nevertheless they were there and whenever they showed up Hermann was kept hidden in the forest with another white boy, I assume it was the one captured by that last raiding party.

Staying hidden was fine with Hermann because by this time he was afraid of the white man. That's how brain-washed he'd become! But the other boy kept coming back into camp to try and contact the Army.

Actually, I don't know why they didn't let the kid contact the Army if he wanted to. I suppose they thought the army would punish them for stealing white kids and it would change their treaty.

But anyway, the Indians kept catching him and finally one of the leaders, Snapping Turtle, took the kid out into the forest, tied him to a tree and left him there with no food and water and he died. Poor kid.

The Army relaxes their watch

After three months of staying or visiting the village consistently the Army figured things were pretty calm, nothing was happening, and the Indians weren't causing any trouble so they stopped coming around as much.

That's when Hermann's band decided to get out of there, they hadn't agreed to any treaty anyway. So they were out enjoying the freedom of the Plains once again...hunting and killing deer, wild sheep and occasional bear down in New Mexico territory.

It's remarkable that in just 6 months or so Hermann had been transformed into an Apache warrior and the transition was so complete that he was now afraid of white men!

In the next post Hermann barely escapes execution and a plague is stopped by natural medicine.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all.

I wish I could just say 'that was then and this is now' . I wish I could believe that now, no one would tie a little boy to a tree and leave him there until he died. It is too horrible to imagine!

yes very true, I mean I wish we could say that too. I just saw on the news today that a woman got sentenced to life in prison for torturing and abusing her kids. History always reminds me that mankind hasn't changed a bit unfortunately.

It's horribly sad that humanity has not learned more through the generations.

Howdy tonight Melinda! it's true, we suck at being kind and understanding to those who are different than us.
Did I ask what you did today or how your day has gone? yesterday you waited on that lawn care guy and that was a waste of time.

Alli was supposed to be home this afternoon from her Florida trip and her flight was canceled. She is not able to get back here until tomorrow night. My grandson is missing a job interview tomorrow, she will miss a day of work and I was counting on her help to get ready for Easter dinner! Dang airlines.

wow! that messed everyone up! what was the reason for the cancelation?

Weather. I guess there were tornado warnings down there. They had already turned in their rental car. At first it was a 20 min delay, then 2 hours then canceled. It was a direct flight and tomorrow they are sending them from Jacksonville to Miami and then from Miami to Chicago, they will be traveling all day and not get here until later in the evening.

oh no! like two days gone! And I hate being routed all over the country like that. dang. They'll be SO glad to get home!

Evenin’ Cowboy @janton. The abuse of the defenceless is hard to accept. The little boy must have had a terrible death.
Horrible atrocities are still happening..@melinda010100 pointed out she wished she could say, “That was then and this is now.”
I just heard of the sentencing of the parents who keep 12 of their children chained and nearly starving.

Howdy redheadpei! yes I just heard that on the news today about those parents! Hard to believe. How's it going up there and what are the big plans for the weekend?

A quiet Good Friday Cowboy. I wouldn’t mind going to the Driving Park Restaurant for Easter dinner 🐣 and watch the horses.
We were invited to my sister’s in Nova Scotia for Easter but they are driving back from Florida and making some overnight stops on the way so we can meet up another time.
What have you and the Missus got planned?

Howdy tonight redheadpei! Is the Driving Park Restaurant at the horse track?

We have nothing but work planned because she works all weekend, 12 hour shifts overnight but she's happy about it because she gets overtime.

Yes it’s at the horse track. They have a great buffet there. If you want to bet on the horses, a server will take the bet right at your table.
Your wife has long hours but as long as she likes it, time will go fast.

Howdy again redheadpei! Well that sounds like a very interesting place, is that on PEI?
Do you know about the Engage tokens?

Yes, in Charlottetown, PEI... about 40 min. drive from the house.
I don’t know about the tokens. How do they work?

Howdy again redheadpei! well that sounds like fun, the buffet and the horses.
The Engagement tokens are mostly just to show appreciation to someone at this point.
Asher from the Engagement League came out with them and you can read about them here:

What an interesting development! But that poor kid! Honestly that is abolutely cruel and they didn't have to do that! And Herman, being scared of white man, oh my gosh! They did a good job on him for sure!

Howdy Miss Lena! I was just going over to your post tonight before I ran out of voting power, very true!
But yes about Hermann, it goes to show how a kid can be brain-washed thoroughly doesn't it?
Through breaking his spirit then trauma then relying on them for food and everything. And I'm sure the
constant talk about the evil and scary white men.
Well, the Texas Rangers WERE scary and many said were evil. They keep coming up later in the story, I still
haven't read it but I glanced ahead today a few chapters because I thought he might be close to going back
to the whites. No, he still has all kinds of adventures before that!

I was even shocked at what happened to that poor kid.

Howdy Janton, I must say this story is nothing like I saw or read before and most people have no clue about it. I mean yes, everybody knows the history, but not in such detail. But I honestly don't think whites no matter how bad they were would let Indian child starve to death like that. They would most likely put him in to reservation, which is not an ideal, but much better. I am not trying to say that the whites were a lot better, but I don't think they were such a savages towards children.

Howdy Miss Lena! Thanks, I hope it's very different of a story, that makes it more interesting and yes it's a view that few white people ever saw. I hope you're right about the whites but I have no idea, probably varied so greatly that it just depended on who you talked to.
For instance people who had their homesteads attacked with family members killed or captured might be pretty vicious.

That's for sure Janton. Either way, it was a hell on earth!!!

yes Ma'am. In the Western territories. From the Mississippi to the East coast it was civilized like Europe! lol..well maybe not that civilized!

Oh I see! How interesting.

Morning janton, hard to read today, trying to understand the killing of a little boy. Not so different today, we still hear horribly sad stories of abuse and neglect.

Howdy angiemitchell! yes Ma'am history always proves that mankind has not changed because we see the same thing today unfortunately.

Hopefully man will improve, i am a hopeful idealist, lol.

haha! I love your positive attitude angiemitchell. And I agree that he CAN but I doubt if he will.
But I also hope that I'm totally wrong. I think we have improved as a race, at least most of the world
is more civil and civilized.

I trust that light will win over dark. It only takes one candle to light up a dark room.

howdy angiemitchell! yes I agree.

Howdy #janton, great story as usual and too bad about the kid tied to the tree. Brainwashing is still practiced in many countries today and kids are trafficked for sinister purposes across borders. Nothing has changed I am afraid!
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! oh I know, it's horrendous what goes on and our country is one of the destinations for the sex slave trade, it's such a terrible situation. I agree, history always reminds me that the human race hasn't improved nearly enough!
Thank you so much for your great comments!

OMG! Why couldn't Snapping Turtle just kill that poor boy instead of making him suffer so badly? So very sad.

Howdy Butterfly! sorry to make you sad, I thought maybe you'd be toughened up by this time.. this things aren't supposed to bother you. I don't even know if it bothered Hermann at that point. He might have been disgusted by the white man ways even though he was one!

This kind of stuff will never toughen me up. Hermann must have been so torn between the Indians and the white men since he is both now.

Howdy Butterfly! well that's good that you aren't going to turn into some kind of caloused bruiser!
Actually by this point he's so brainwashed that he not only sees whites as the enemy but is scared of them!

You would think they could have brought the other kid a something to keep him alive while he "waited." You know, so they could trade him later.

yes sir, it doesn't make sense to me unless the Indian just wanted him to die and it was a revenge thing against the whites.
