Abul Muzaffar Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad Aurangzeb, the 6th Mughal emperor of India was the third son of Emperor Shah Jahan. At the time of his birth, his father was a governor of Gujarat. Aurangzeb's reign was from 1658 to 1707. By the time he turned 16, Impressed by his courage and valour, Shah Jahan appointed him governor of Gujarat, and later governor of Multan and Sindh. When he was appointed as the governor of Multan and Sindh, he engaged in a long battle in an effort to capture Kandahar from the Safavid army but he failed to do so. Aurangzeb defeated his elder brother Dara’s armies and took his father as prisoner. Dara was condemned to death by his own brother. His cruelty and discriminatory policies led the Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs, and the Jats to rebel against him. He destroyed many Hindu temples, prohibited religious meets and enforced unfair taxes on non-Muslims, which Akbar had remove. These rebellions and wars led to the exhaustion of the imperial Mughal treasury and army. He also executed several other noted personalities including Sarmad Kashani a controversial Sufi mystic and Sambhaji the leader of the Maratha Confederacy. His armies consisted of some 500,000 camp followers, 50,000 camels and 30,000 war elephants.

The total number of battles fought was in hundreds. Every war is driven by politics. It was started in 1681 and lasted till 1707.Rather war is just one of the means to do politics. This war was not an exception. It occurred over vast geographical expanse spanning four biggest states of modern India- Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. This war was ended with Aurangzeb's death. The great Maratha king, Shivaji maharaj killed Aurangzeb very cleverly.
