The Origin of Jeans

Let's take a look at how jeans came to be used in clothing.

Somewhere in the middle of the 19th century, Levi Strauss, a German immigrant in the United States started the production of trousers made of hard fabric for goldminers in California.

He used a heavy material, the jean cloth, to make the trousers.

Strauss together with Jacob Davis, a tailor who also invented the idea of putting metal rivets at the strain areas of trousers to strengthen them, became partners. In 1873, they obtained a patent for the riveted trousers after which they became known as Levi's.

Jeans were worn by labourers as their workwear until they became adopted by people everywhere as casualwear.

Today jeans are widely worn by the young and old as easy or casual wear. They come in different colours, but the blue jeans is most popular.
