Captain Canary GW35

With the breaking news that Manchester United v. Liverpool will be played on Thursday 13th May (GW35), we have a triple gameweek for United and a double gameweek for Liverpool to prepare for. As we rub our hands at the prospect, we must be mindful that Man United will play tomorrow night (Thursday) then Sunday, Tuesday and then Thursday again. 4 matches in 7 days.

What are the best captaincy options I'm considering for GW35?

1. Bruno Fernandes

Despite being Man United's top scorer this season by 61 clear points, he's only returned 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 8 fixtures. This doesn't sound like captaincy material to me but it's Bruno Fernandes. Without doubt Man United's best player this season and with 3 fixtures, you'd expect 2 or more penalties. There is the possibility of rotation too but given his importance to the team, he'll probably get the most minutes out of all of Man United's attacking players and is narrowly my preferred captaincy selection.

2. Mason Greenwood

Whereas Fernandes has 2 returns in 8 matches, Greenwood is the in-form player at the moment with 5 goals and 1 assist in his last 4 matches, putting him top of the FPL form charts. He's been deployed as a central striker in that time and with Martial probably missing the rest of the season, will almost certainly share that spot with Cavani. Rotation is a bigger risk than with Fernandes and whereas Fernandes is the safe option (likely to be the most captained player this gameweek), Greenwood could be a big differential if you're playing catch up.

3. Mohammed Salah

A Liverpool double gameweek would normally guarantee a Salah captaincy, especially as he's now scored 3 in 4 matches. He's almost certain to get something against a poor Southampton defence but his record against Man United is well known (a.k.a. bad) so I would be cautious.

4 Kelechi Iheanacho

Not far behind Greenwood in the form charts with 4 goals and 2 assists in his last 4 matches is a man that just 10 gameweeks ago had started just 4 matches all season. He's undroppable at the moment and with a home game against Newcastle will be ready to fill his boots again. As with Salah, his 2nd match is against Man United which dampens his appeal in my opinion.

5. James Ward-Prowse

If you want left-field, here's left field. Ward-Prowse has quietly amassed 142 points so far this season which has included 5 double digit hauls. I expect him to get something against a poor Crystal Palace side after hoping that he'll get something against an improved Liverpool. With Danny Ings out injured again, Ward-Prowse will dominate all set-pieces and should also be on penalty duty should the opportunity arise.

Sort:

I like the look of Greenwood and have some ground to make up so might well get him in and captain him. Midfielder analysis coming up so we'll see what that tells me!

Who did you captain?

Triple captained Greenwood. Solskjaer saying he's got to rotate doesn't fill me with confidence but he's young and enthusiastic so I've got some hope.
