⚽ Eintracht Frankfurt - Europa League Champions

It was a final that few could have predicted. Eintracht Frankfurt beating the odds to overcome Barcelona, Real Betis and West Ham on the way to the final and similarly, Rangers were the underdogs when they overcame Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

The atmosphere was great and there didn't appear to be any neutral fans in the ground (unlike the forthcoming Champions League final which will have 30,000 suits (48% of the capacity)). The Frankfurt end in particular was in great voice and looked incredible.

1st Half

The game itself was scrappy to start with and from the outset, each team's approach appeared clear. Rangers would play a direct style of play, getting the ball up to Aribo and Kent quickly whilst Frankfurt would work their wing backs (Knauff and Kostic) hard. Kostic looked like a player of real quality and I can understand why he was Frankfurt's most explosive Fantasy asset this season.

As expected, Frankfurt's best chances came from these wing backs and it was Knauff who probably came closest on 20 minutes, cutting in from the right flank forcing Allan McGregor into a save. McGregor joining the iconic Dino Zoff and Edwin van der Saar as the 3rd player aged 40 or older to play in a major European final (source). Some great goalkeepers now joined by Allan McGregor.

Rangers' best opportunity came from a free kick which saw ex-Blade John Lundstram's header comfortably tipped over by Trapp.

The commentator for the match was Peter Dreary Drury who just witters on about all manner of shit throughout his commentary. Throughout the 1st half, I learned that "statistically speaking", Seville is the hottest city in Mainland Europe and that the 1960 European cup final between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt (which Real won 7-3) was voted the greatest European match of the century. Something like that anyway, I tend to stop listening when he starts wittering on.

Despite the 1st half ending goalless, I felt that Frankfurt probably edged it but lacked quality in front of goal. It didn't matter how much the wing backs created, there wasn't a Karim Benzema to be in the right place.

2nd Half

The 2nd half began by learning that the 1986 European Cup final was perhaps the dullest in history. A goalless draw between Steaua Bucharest and Barcelona being won by Steaua Bucharest on penalties.

The match continued in same the pattern as the 1st half with Frankfurt upping the tempo. Lindstrom's deflected shot leaving McGregor stranded and narrowly going wide and then on 54 minutes, Rangers sprang into life - Ryan Kent lashing a great opportunity wide and a couple of minutes later, a defining moment. An unfortunate slip by Tuta put Joe Aribo through on goal and he held his composure to put Rangers 1-0 up. Rangers perhaps fortunate to lead but their direct approach had finally paid off.

Rangers were on course to become the first Scottish side to lift a European trophy since Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to win the Cup Winners Cup in 1983 (thanks Peter Dreary, again).

It took a little while for Frankfurt to settle again but when they did, they managed to get themselves back on level terms. My suspicion that the wing backs would play a crucial role proved to be true, with Kostic whipping in a cross which saw Borre nip in at the near post for a deserved equaliser.

Just as I expected the momentum to shift significantly to Frankfurt, the water break allowed Rangers to regroup and the pattern returned as the game drifted into extra time.

Extra Time

With players cramping up in the heat, Rangers were able to control the tempo in the 1st half with the 2nd half much more evenly matched. The best chances came at the death with Frankfurt's keeper, Kevin Trapp making a point blank save to prevent a Ryan Kent tap in and then a trade mark Travenier free kick appearing to be an easy save as the ball made its way towards the top corner.

The statistics will probably tell you that Frankfurt deserved to win this tonight but a lack of quality up front probably meant a draw was a fair result.

Penalties

Having watched Nottingham Forest beat Sheffield United on penalties the night before, I was looking forward to the excitement and drama of another penalty shoot out, quietly hoping that Rangers would come out triumphant. With the commentators praising Allan McGregor's ability with penalties, you'd have thought the trophy was already in Glasgow.

The coin favoured Rangers - taking the penalties in front of their own fans and being able to take the first penalty. 60% of penalty shoot outs are won by the team that takes the first kick (source).

But it wasn't to be. In a shoot out of great quality, it was substitute Aaron Ramsey who was the only player to miss. It seems to happen so often - a substitute comes on in the final minute of extra time to miss from the spot.

It's a cruel way to lose any match, let alone a final.

Phew, what a relief. I was keeping the upvote note on a few devices so I am always able to include it when upvoting and I was trying my best to keep it consistent. So I am pleased that it turns out that just leaving a comment based on the post itself is totally fine, even better. Thanks for letting me know really, wish you told me earlier 😁 #dreamteam

I guess this is my favourite picture because it looks genuine. I mean an adult might always have additional reasons for being that upset like having lost a bet on the team, etc. whilst a child would show just pure emotions. Other than that I certainly don't like seeing or hearing crying children 😉 It sounds like you work on your posts the way I sometimes do, like right now I am drafting an article which I plan to post tomorrow.

Ha ha - I was worried about anything in case you were offended 🙊

I knew that I was going to write this post earlier in the day and had planned to include a lot more but it was too long so I binned off a lot of it. It was nice because I used to write posts like this a lot but haven't had the energy to do it for a little while.

As an aside - I don't know if motorsport's your thing but Formula E is in London at the end of July - https://www.fiaformulae.com/en/championship/race-calendar/2021-2022/london/tickets

I've got my ticket for the Sunday 🙂

I am here on the platform to learn from others and I really appreciate any feedback to do with photography, writing and Steemit in general. So thanks again 🙌 I haven’t blogged anywhere else so I have no previous experience 👩‍💻

I am not a huge fan of motorsports to be honest but my mother certainly is so I will pass it on. I hope it is not too hot at the end of July.

I hope it is not too hot at the end of July.

Historically, I'd laugh and say "of course it won't be, you're in England" but it could be nice. Or it could rain. I'm hoping that it will be approximately 21 degrees 🙂

quietly hoping that Rangers would come out triumphant.

Yeah me too. And I can't really say why, possibly because they were the underdogs..
Or maybe I just like some of the players and was just rooting for them; a player like Roofe (idk, I just like him🙂)
I couldn't get the chance to watch the match but I got so happy when I got a notification that Rangers got the first goal.. but well, we don't always get what we want in football...

I love your post by the way, the sarcasm and all😅 and you don't seem to like Mr. Drury too much do you?

You're not gonna resteem this post on your blog this time??

Ha ha - where do I start with Peter Drury? I don't know when my disliking of him began but when you notice something annoying, it becomes increasingly noticeable to the point at which everything he says is unbearable. It probably began when he was too busy rambling on about some crap that he didn't notice what was going on in the game. And then started ranting about a referee giving a free kick for what he thought was somebody diving when it was for something completely different. He's probably gotten so used to nobody listening and just being background noise to a match, that he doesn't even bother to get things right any more.

Something like that anyway 🤣

😅 I kinda get it now

Saludos bro 🍌

I got lucky with the photos. I decided to write a post about the match earlier in the day (my plan was to include their routes to the final but the match review was long enough already) and so I was ready with my camera. The photos are all from replays as well as the lifting of the trophy which I waited for. I took lots of photos that weren't used and got quite lucky with how many times they replayed things from so many different angles.

The only thing I missed was some of the best photos of people crying and I only caught the one of the child - which many a football fan can relate to!

Was Di Maria popular at PSG? I haven't seen much of him since Man Utd ruined him.

Según lo que ví en su despedida, si era querido por los fanáticos y los compañeros, sigue siendo un crack infra valorado, ahora que se fue a Juventus veamos que tanto mantiene el nivel.

He's probably the kind of player that Vlahovic needs - perhaps one to consider for next seasons Fantalive Serie A 🙂

Por su edad, es probable que no sea caro, así que creo q sería una perdida no tenerlo en su alineación 😎🤘🏽

Wait what. You don't like Peter Drury??

Ha ha. No, I don't. There are many reasons, partly because he doesn't seem to pay attention to the match, partly because he adds words that are totally unnecessary and I'm sure there are lots more reasons.

Sometimes, he's like the 2nd half of this clip:

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Great photo selection! Congratulations, your interesting post has been upvoted by @petface, who is on the hunt for unique, quality content here in the WORLD OF XPILAR. Have a lovely day.

I hope that you don' t mind me saying... I don't like this bit at the end of every comment -

It makes something personal feel impersonal ☹️

Hi 👋 I saw that some of the curators leave similar comments so I thought that it is something you need to say really. But it makes total sense what you are saying and I will stop including it. By the way the last photo with the kid is my favourite 👩‍💻

😊 Yoo don’t need to do it - your comments have always been more meaningful and more… you 😊

It’s funny that picture’s your favourite. I only added it this morning because when I reread my post, it ended too abruptly. I always think it’s mean to show pictures of children crying on telly. I prefer them showing the grown men and women crying 🤣

@the-gorilla, is this any better than what petface wrote?👀
