Steemit Learning Challenge-S22W1; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
On this occasion I will take part in a lesson with the theme Steemit Learning Challenge-S22W1; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This lesson was held by Mrs. @ashkhan. Previously I was interested in some of the exercises in the guide, because it was all very useful for me. Besides gaining knowledge, I can also maintain my health and flexibility. Here I would also like to invite Mr. @muzack1, Mr. @pelon53, Mr. @irawandedy, and Mrs. @chant.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome? Write it down in your own words after gaining knowledge from the lesson post.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that occurs in the wrist due to repetitive use of the hand creating nerve compression that can arise from various reasons. Carpal tunnel syndrome is not a disease inherited by parents or inherited. There are several causes of carpal tunnel syndrome, including the following:
- With excessive use or due to repeated pressure, for example when someone is typing on a computer or when someone uses objects that have vibrations, this causes nerve damage and also weakens the muscles.
- the habit This carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to compression of the median nerve that works through the forearm to the wrist by passing through various channels that are usually called carpal tunnels.
- Another cause is due to hormonal changes, for example in pregnancy or menopause.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome is also caused by the median nerve that is larger than the carpal tunnel.
The symptoms can be characterized by several things, including:
- Pain around the hand, especially in the wrist and fingers, even worse at night.
- There is a feeling of numbness and also tingling caused by nerve pressure around the hand, especially in the fingers, index fingers and middle fingers.
- Weakening of the muscles in the forearm which of course occurs due to repeated use.
Carpal tunnel syndrome also has its types, namely Acute CTS, Chronic CTS, Primary CTS and Secondary CTS. Acute CTS is characterized by sudden symptoms that could be due to trauma or injury. These symptoms usually last for several days, even reaching weeks. Meanwhile, Chronic CTS can be characterized by the gradual appearance of symptoms which are generally caused by repeated use. In Primary CTS we can mark the presence of idiopathic causes of carpal tunnel, which means we don't know the cause. Secondary CTS occurs due to the onset of secondary diseases such as those that occur in pregnancy, diabetes, trauma or injury and thyroid disease.
How is carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed? Is there a clinical examination or assessment test?
In the material provided there are several diagnoses of carpal tunnel syndrome that can be done by several methods, but the least used is :
- Through direct examination by a doctor or physical therapist.
- EMG which intends to determine the size of the muscle's electrical activity.
- By taking the NCS (neurve conductivity study) test which means that the test will determine the level of strength in the muscles and also the level of muscle speed.
Special tests
In addition, the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome can also be passed with special tests, which are carried out in physiotherapy with the aim of confirming the diagnosis. Which in this special test will go through several tests including the Phalen Test, Film Test Test, reverse Phalen Test, Tinel Sign to Median Nerve Compression.
Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share a picture, gif, or video of you practicing, preferably a gif or video.
Arm Prayer Stretch
I do this exercise in a seated position with my hands together, similar to praying, and then lower them slowly until they are parallel to my chest, with my forearms lying horizontally. I do this repeatedly.
Stretches for CTS
There are three kinds of exercises that I do in this video, the first is to spread my hands to the right side or usually to the left, then I hold the hand that has been lying horizontally by inserting the thumb into it as seen in the video above. Then I do the wrist movement by bending down and up slowly and repeatedly. Next, I pressed my palm against the wall by extending one hand, then lifted one thumb and held it for a moment. Lastly, I do it by spreading one hand horizontally and grasping all the fingers, then bending the fingers grasped at the wrist with the help of the other hand slowly repeatedly.
Median Nerve Glides
This exercise is done in a standing position, where I rest my left palm against a wall or door as seen in the video above, then I do head movements by turning my head slowly to the left and right.
Share your reviews after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individuals, or patients.
After I do this Arm Prayer Stretch exercise I feel more relieved and make breathing smoother, on both hands to the shoulders also feel released from pain and joints in the muscles. This exercise is very suitable to be applied in everyday especially after doing heavy work that usually causes sore hands and pain.
The Stretches for CTS exercise makes my hands really feel light after doing it, starting from all the fingers to the wrist, arm and shoulder. Especially after my hands are typing on the keyboard, of course, it makes them sore from repetition.
Meanwhile, after I did this Median Nerve Glides exercise, it certainly had a big influence on the body, especially in the neck and arms. Because this exercise makes my median nerve lighter and relieved. Likewise, the part of my hand that is leaning against the wall can feel good.
That's my brief writing in this valuable lesson, hopefully it will be useful for myself and also for all my friends. Thanks to Mrs. @ashkhan

Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.
Observations
Task 1 (3/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about carpal tunnel syndrome, its symptoms, cause, it's types. There are 4 types that I explained in the lesson. Acute, chronic, primary and secondary. That's good you explain them. I appreciate your effort.
Task 2 (2.7/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination, history taking, special tests and investigations. It would be better to add explanation of special tests too. Great.
Task 3 (3.9/4)
You try the wrist rotations, CTS stretches and arm prayer stretch exercises. You did the wrist rotations, CTS stretches, arm prayer stretch correctly. But it would be better to hold CTS stretches position for at least 5 to 10 seconds, you did correctly in arm prayer stretch. Always remember to apply heat pack before performing exercises to relax the muscles and reduce stiffness. I appreciate your efforts.
Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or any type of wrist. Thank you.
Thank you so much Mrs. @ashkhan for the detailed feedback and thoughtful appreciation! I am grateful for the recognition of my efforts in explaining carpal tunnel syndrome and its various aspects. Your constructive suggestions, particularly regarding adding explanations for specific tests and increasing the holding time for CTS stretches, are very valuable. I will definitely keep them in mind to improve my understanding and implementation in the future. Your encouragement motivates me to continue learning and applying this knowledge to benefit people dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome. Once again, thank you for your words and guidance.
