Jim was anxious to start his new school as they have moved to a new country. He missed his close friends and other parts of his previous life. He constantly reminded his parents that he is terrified of joining this new school with the kids he didn’t know. His parents assured him that things will work out eventually even if it will take some time in the beginning. He will adjust to this new life in a new place but Jim still felt butterflies in his tummy every time the thought of going to new school crossed his mind.

On his first day to school, Jim threw every tantrum he knew up his sleeves to avoid going to school. He was afraid to not fit in. His parents finally caved and offered to accompany him to school. As they reached the class Jim went in while his parents had a talk with his new teacher, who was a kind lady and assured Jim’s parents that she will take care of this matter as she already have kids from diverse cultures in her class. When Mrs. David got in the classroom she found a scared looking Jim sitting alone.

Mrs. David asked everyone to sit in a circle. After the kids sat in a circle she asked them to take turns to describe what they all have in common, what are their wants and needs? Kids took turns while coming up with different answers some came up they all had the same body parts, how they all need food, water and shelter to survive, they all need love and support from their loved ones, how they love to play certain games, watch familiar shows. At this Jim who was nervous started to relax as he enjoyed the same shows and loved to play all those games and had the similar wants and needs like other kids. When his turn came he who was worried earlier stated how he loves to watch anime at which the anime fans cheered.

Then Mrs. David summed up her lesson that even though we may look different and have different backgrounds or belong to different cultures but we all have similar needs and wants which may differ slightly because of our unique circumstances but we are all alike when it comes to basic needs and wants and how living in harmony and respecting the differences is easy if you know that we all have a lot of things in common rather than stressing on the differences. After the lesson students were all happy and were talking about their common interests while Jim happily sat with his new friends enjoying his first day at school.

A very fitting and hopeful story. Or in other words: that's exactly how it should be! Unfortunately, I have the impression that it's not quite so simple in reality. We need more stories... ;-))

Yup but I believe if we keep on inculcating these values in our kids the world may become a better place if even one person or student changes their perspective on not focusing on differences that’s a win win situation!!

This Jim is definitely me... Due to the job nature of my father, we had to constantly move cities every 2 to 3 years. Those butterflies on the first day of school - I still have nightmares about those.

I didn't have a teacher like Jim's, but my elder brother, who is only one year older than me, would make sure that I was okay in my class, especially during those first few days.

We used to move provinces (akin to states in other countries), and I have seen this cultural diversity much more closely.

A very beautiful work of fiction. You did justice to the prompt. Congratulations.

Thank you and thank you.

I’m glad you found it relatable!! That’s the highest praise if someone can relate to your writing. Much regards for the appreciation!! Thanks alot.
