The painter Cristóbal Rojas Poleo is one of the most important painters in Venezuela; It is not in vain that the School of Arts in the city of Caracas is named after him as a tribute to his work. He was born in the valleys of Tuy (Cúa) in the state of Miranda in 1859. He had a somewhat difficult childhood because the country was at the time of the Federal War. Very young, at the age of 13, his father, who was Consul of Venezuela in the Dominican Republic, died and he had to start working to help his family.

His grandfather motivated him to be a cartoonist. He was a student of the artist José Manuel Maucó at the Academy of Drawing and Painting. In 1881, the teacher Antonio Herrera Toro hired him as an assistant for the decoration of the Cathedral Church of Caracas.

In 1883 he participated in the Exhibition of the Centennial of the Birth of the Liberator, and the Venezuelan state, in addition to buying his oil painting, gave him a scholarship to study in Paris. While in Europe he met the Venezuelan painter Arturo Michelena (another giant of Venezuelan brushes).

In 1888 he fell ill with tuberculosis and retired to Villeneuve-Saint-Georges (France) to spend a season in fresh air. During that stay he continued painting in large formats and sending his works to various salons in Paris.

In 1890, he returned to Caracas and died on November 8, at the age of 31, a victim of tuberculosis.

His legacy was great for Venezuela. As mentioned at the beginning, the main School of Visual Arts in Caracas is named after him, as is a Municipality in the State of Miranda. His remains have been in the National Pantheon since 1958.
