On June 14, 1783, the third and most violent explosive eruption of the laki volcano occurred, located in Iceland, whose activity began on June 8 and continued for eight months, in Iceland the earth literally opened, because the laki did not shows the typical image of the volcano with a mountain with a crater on top that ejects lava.
The laki is a large fissure in the ground that the eruption of 1783 opened with a chain of 130 craters expelling ash, toxic gases and 14 cubic kilometers of lava, in Iceland the eruption killed about 9,000 people and more than half of the cattle of La island, but the worst was the impact it had on the climate of Europe and other continents, in the United Kingdom the summer of 1783 was known as the summer of sand due to the fall of ash.
In Europe as a whole, the cloud that generated the eruption blocked the sun's rays, lowering temperatures. This, together with the toxic gases and ashes that fell on the fields for eight months, caused health problems, disastrous harvests, and triggered a famine that lasted several years. .
Experts estimate that this event directly or indirectly killed some 6 million people and plunged European peasants into misery, historians believe that the situation was one of the engines that set fire to the French Revolution.
In other continents there were also very negative effects of the laki eruption, in Africa the rains decreased, they decreased so noticeably that there was a reduction in the flow of the Nile, many lands could not be planted in Egypt and that caused a famine that killed a sixth of the country's population.
There were also changes in rainfall in India Arabia and China, in Japan the impact of the laki was added to the eruption of the Asama volcano, both catastrophes triggered the great tenmei famine of 1782 to 1788 that according to historians killed some 900,000 people.
This laki eruption was not the first nor will it be the last, Iceland is an island with a surface area of just over 100,000 square kilometers that is similar to the surface of Cuba or Guatemala, it was created by volcanic action on the mid-Atlantic ridge, which is a huge crack that runs through the Atlantic Ocean from which that ocean is expanding.
The island is in the middle of that rift, a part of Iceland is expanding towards America and the other part towards Europe, it is only a matter of time before the laki rift reopens and with it the door of hell opens as it was. affirmed the religious Christians who described it for the first time.
We must learn from volcanoes because the volcano that gave rise to this terrible event is still active and we still have to learn a lot from it and be prepared to avoid a new disaster like the laki one.
