On one of my trips to the north of Portugal we went to Vila Nova de Cerveira, a beautiful Vila Minhota, county seat, right in the North region, overlooking the River Minho that separates it from the Spanish village of Góian, which is crossed by a ferry -boat. A border town, it developed around its walls, which protected it from Spanish attacks, located in a region of great natural beauty.
After exploring the village and heading towards the mountain along a narrow road, at the top we find the Cervo sculpture, a popular iron work by the sculptor José Rodrigues. Located on a hill called Alto do Crasto, it is a tribute to the symbol of the village where, in the past, deer was abundant. Despite being located at just 300 meters of altitude, it amazes for the view of extreme beauty and magnificence. From here you can see a large part of the river Minho, from the passage through Valença to the mouth of Caminha. On the other side, you can see the municipality of Tominho, already in Galicia. On this side you can see part of the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira, as well as Serra da Arga and Serra de Góis.
In the center of the river is the international bridge – better known as Ponte da Amizade, which connects Cerveira to Goián –, the islands of Boega and Amores. Be sure to visit this magnificent viewpoint, one of the most beautiful in the country!
