El abogado Utterson, un típico caballero inglés de la era victoriana (1837-1901) al que no le gustan las cosas no convencionales, es informado por un amigo suyo de un incidente relacionado con un tal Mr. Hyde, y, por las circunstancias, deduce que este Hyde está relacionado con su amigo el Dr. Jekyll, probablemente a través de algún chantaje: que Hyde amenace a Jekyll con exponer algún oculto error del pasado del doctor que arruine su reputación. Jekyll, sin embargo, se muestra tranquilo al respecto.

De la relación entre Jekyll y Hyde trata esta novela corta, que es la relación que tienen entre sí las distintas facetas de las vidas de las personas, tal como el comportamiento público para apegarse a convenciones en relación con lo que se desea hacer que va contra esas convenciones

Disfruté mucho esta historia, narrada de modo en que prácticamente ni le sobra ni le falta nada en términos de extensión óptima. Una novela de misterio sin detectives, con el corazón del misterio revelándose en el anteúltimo capítulo y explicado en su totalidad en el último; con un elemento fuerte de ciencia ficción, la droga, aunque esto podría ser considerado fantasía; y las luchas intrapersonales, que son el corazón de la historia y la sede del terror.

Por supuesto, casi todo mundo conoce por algún modo la esencia de la historia. Yo había leído de pequeño una versión resumida para niños, pero aunque útil para conocer el núcleo e idea de este clásico, me alegro mucho de haber leído la historia original. No sólo porque me ha causado un deseo de leer más de Stevenson (tanto me ha gustado su prosa, más allá de la historia de en sí), sino porque los mayores detalles que tiene la original respecto a la resumida de la relación entre Jekyll y Hyde es enriquecedora (por ejemplo, el hecho de que Hyde, un hombrecito muy pequeño, crece con el correr del tiempo).

La edición que tengo tiene además un muy buen análisis de la obra y su contexto de creación, por Mariel Ortolano, además de una selección de ensayos y cartas de Stevenson y opiniones de otros escritores sobre esta obra y sobre Stevenson como escritor.

STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON

Lawyer Utterson, a typical English gentleman of the Victorian era (1837-1901) who dislikes unconventional things is informed by a friend about an incident related to a Mr. Hyde, and given the circumstances, deduces that Hyde is connected in some way with his friend Dr. Jekyll, probably through blackmail; that is, that Hyde threatens Jekyll to expose some hidden mistake of the doctor’s past that would ruin his reputation. However, when speak to about Hyde, Jekyll remains calm.

This novel is about the relationship of Jekyll and Hyde, which is the relationship that different facets of people’s lives have between them, such as a public behavior is displayed to stick to social conventions is in relation with what one wishes to do when one’s desires go against such conventions.

I enjoyed this story quite a lot, narrated in such a way that practically it doesn’t exceeds nor lacks anything in terms of optimum extension. A mystery novel without detectives, with the heart of the mystery revealed in the next to last chapter and explained in full in the last one; with a strong element of science fiction, the drug, although this might also be considered fantasy; and intrapersonal conflicts, which are the heart of the story as well as the foundations for terror.

Of course, almost everyone knows about this story some way or the other. For instance, I had read as quite little a short version for kids, but while useful to know the core, the idea, of this classic, I am very happy that I decided to read the full original story, and only wished I had done so years before, not only because it has caused me a desire to read more by Stevenson (that’s how much I liked his prose, beyond the story itself) but also because the higher degree of detail of the full story is much more enriching (for example, the fact the Hyde, a small man, grows in size as time passes).
