En 1899 el inventor de nombre George les presenta a sus amigos una miniatura de lo que dice es una máquina del tiempo, artefacto para ir al pasado o al futuro. A pesar de sus explicaciones y de que manda a dicho modelo a avanzar en el tiempo (haciendo que desaparezca de la vista de todos), sus amigos no se convencen de que haya sido así, e incluso le preguntan por qué beneficios comerciales tendría la supuesta máquina del tiempo.

No obstante esa decepción, George se convierte en un viajero del tiempo: viaja hacia el futuro, donde, tras unas paradas descorazonadoras –porque cada vez que se detuvo había una guerra– avanza cientos de miles de años hasta donde la humanidad se ha divivido en dos: los niños y adolescentes eloi viviendo en la superficie sin preocuparse por nada, y abajo los misteriosos –y más simiescos en aspecto– morlocks...

Los principales puntos fuertes de la película son la simple exposición de temas profundos; la actuación de Rod Taylor para interpretar a un personaje que no es la imagen de un científico loco o del estereotípico genio antisocial encerrado en el laboratorio, sino una persona muy normal, cosa que también se nota en las escenas de acción en el clímax, donde no pelea como un artista marcial sino más bien de un modo "callejero"; y los efectos especiales pueden apreciarse incluso hoy si se tiene en cuenta la época en que se hizo la película (le valieron un Oscar a los mejores efectos especiales).

Así, la película me gustó mucho por los motivos mencionados, y además, la adaptación homónima del 2002, que había visto antes, en cambio, no me había gustado.

The Time Machine [1960]

In 1899 the inventor named George shows to his friends a miniature version of what he claims to be a Time Machine, an artefact to go to the past or the future. Despite his explanations and of sending said mini machine forward in time (making it disappear in front of everyone’s eyes), his friends are not convinced that what George says has happened actually did, and they also even question him about what commercial benefits the supposed time machine would bring.

Nevertheless the disappointment, George becomes a time traveller with his sized-for-humans time machine: he travels into the future, where, after some disheartening stops at certain points in time –because each of those times there were wars–, he moves forward hundreds of thousands of years till a point in which humanity has divided itself in two: the children and teenagers Eloi, who live in the surface without a care in the world other than fear to the night; and under, the mysterious –and more ape like in looks– Morlocks…

The main strong points of the movie are its simple exposition of deep themes; Rod Taylor’s acting to interpret a character that is neither the image of a stereotypical mad scientist or antisocial genius locked in a laboratory, but instead a quite normal person, which shows as well in the action scenes at the climax where he does not fight as a martial artist or anything like that, and uses instead a “street fighting style”; also, the special effects can be appreciated even today if one takes into account the time at which the movie was made (and made it win an Oscar).

Thus, I enjoyed the movie a lot, and besides, the homonymous adaptation of the year 2002, which I had seen before, had not been enjoyed by me.
