¿Por qué la serie "Lucifer" es tan buena?

Lucifer es una serie originalmente de Fox, basada en la serie de cómics del mismo nombre, y comprada por Netflix tras finalizar su tercera temporada. Recientemente ha terminado la temporada 5, y sólo queda una por emitir.

¿Qué es lo que más deseas?

Lucifer Estrella de la Mañana es el Diablo y ha dejado el Infierno para tomarse unas vacaciones en Los Ángeles cinco años antes del comienzo de la serie, pero no tiene intenciones de regresar al Infierno nunca más. En Los Ángeles se ha convertido en el dueño de un club nocturno llamado Lux, y además de por el mismo club, tiene una cierta fama por otorgar favores a cambio de futura devolución sin especificar.

Ahora bien, esta versión del Diablo no tiene nada cercano a la omnisciencia ni a la omnipotencia: como un ángel caído, tiene los poderes de otros ángeles de la serie, que son superfuerza, alta invulnerabilidad, alas de ángel (aunque él se amputó las suyas) y una habilidad única, que en su caso es sacar a la luz los deseos de otras personas simplemente mediante preguntárselos al mirarlas a los ojos. Y fuera de otorgar favores, todo lo que hace es estar de fiesta con música, alcohol y otras drogas, y tener sexo con un enorme número de mujeres y hombres.

En el primer capítulo, una mujer a quien Lucifer había hecho un favor y por quien sentía un poco de aprecio fue asesinada en la entrada de su club, y cuando la policía llega a investigar se encuentra por primera vez con la coprotagonista, la detective Chloe Decker. Deseando asegurarse de que los culpables sean castigados, Lucifer en persona sale a investigar el asesinato, y se cruza otra vez con Chloe, convenciéndola de que lo deje ir con ella gracias a la información que él acababa de obtener, pero algo muy importante ocurre en este segundo encuentro, que es que Chloe se muestra inmune a la habilidad de Lucifer de revelar los deseos de otros, así como al magnetismo general que él genera en la gente. Este factor es lo que lo lleva a insistir en trabajar con Chloe en los siguientes casos que ella tiene, y aunque al principio a Chloe no le gusta esto, la habilidad única de Lucifer viene muy útil para interrogar sospechosos, además de sus conexiones y de su pensamiento lateral (este debido a no concentrarse mucho en los casos en sí sino en cómo los casos pueden relacionarse con problemas que él mismo tenga, o simplemente porque prefiere hacer algo que lo divierta aún estando en la escena del crimen); entonces, Chloe termina aceptando su ayuda y empieza a disfrutar de trabajar con él, y Lucifer termina convirtiéndose en un asesor civil de la policía y compañero de Chloe.

Ahora bien, la historia tiene tres núcleos: uno es la parte de resolver crímenes (usualmente asesinatos); otro es el lado celestial de las cosas: ángeles, demonios, y el mismo Dios, de quien Lucifer y los otros celestiales siempre se están preguntando cuáles son sus intenciones; y la parte más importante es el desarrollo de las relaciones entre los personajes (siendo la historia de amor de Chloe y Lucifer la más importante) así como el automejoramiento, que suena más específico que desarrollo personal.

Para este último núcleo doble un factor clave es la doctora Linda Martin, quien al final del primer capítulo se convierte en la terapeuta de Lucifer. A través de sus sesiones con ella, Lucifer intenta entender los cambios que ha estado teniendo últimamente, y aunque su primera reacción suele ser tomar el mensaje exactamente erróneo de cada cosa que Linda diga, esto ayuda a avanzar el argumento no sólo a través de Lucifer, sino también a través de otros que también reciben consejo de Linda, sea profesionalmente o no, siendo el más importante de estos Mazikeen "Maze" Smith, una demonio y la mejor torturadora del Infierno.

Maze es la mano derecha de Lucifer y cuando acepta que no se van a ir de Los Ángeles por un buen tiempo, empieza a buscar cómo encajar como algo más que una empleada de Lucifer en Lux; así, intenta tener amigos, y los primeros dos son Trixie, la pequeña hija de Chloe, y Linda. En la segunda temporada, Maze comenzará a trabajar como cazarrecompenzas ("¡Cazar humanos es un trabajo! ¡¿Quién sabía?!"). Maze, por su personalidad, también es el personaje con más altibajos en sus relaciones con los demás (Amenadiel la llama en una ocasión (aunque estando enojado con ella): "...es una maníaca motivada por la ira y la violencia").

Hay un par más de protagonistas de los que hablar: el detective Daniel Espinoza, separado de Chloe al principio y luego divorciado, tiene una relación tensa con Lucifer de amigo-enemigo; Amenadiel, el primer guerrero de Dios, encargado de regresar a Lucifer al Infierno en la primera temporada, y no sólo falla en su tarea sino que además pierde sus poderes angelicales y se queda varado en la Tierra con los humanos que desprecia; y desde la temporada dos en adelante, Ella Lopez, investigadora de escena de crimen, amiga de todo el mundo y sobre quien más se centra la pregunta de creer en Dios a pesar de la falta de prueba de su existencia o de entendimiento de por qué cosas malas pasan.

Para concluir: Lucifer tiene un gran humor y grandes momentos dramáticos; le falta un poco en las escenas de acción sobrenaturales, pero la acción no es clave para la serie. Y volviendo a la automejora: todos los personajes tienen altibajos, algunos muy pronunciados y largos en el tiempo, pero eventualmente toman responsabilidad por sus propios actos que los causaron, y dos cosas están relacionadas con eso.

Primero, que cada persona que va al Infierno sólo está allí por sus propios sentimientos de culpa; las puertas de cada celda del Infierno ni siquiera están cerradas, y si alguien puede superar sus sentimientos de culpa irá al Paraíso (aunque Lucifer dice en la segunda o tercera temporada que nadie ha logrado eso nunca, alguien lo logró en la reciente segunda parte de la temporada cinco). Y en segundo lugar, en la tercera temporada Amenadiel y Lucifer aprenden que los ángeles se autoactualizan sus poderes e incluso su aspecto: para no revelar mucho a quienes aún no han visto la serie, sólo menciono que la cara de diablo de Lucifer (una asustante cara de diablo tradicional, por así decirlo) aparece después de que Lucifer fue desterrado al Infierno, pero él aprende que eso pasó porque se veía a sí mismo como un monstruo. Así, los pensamientos inconscientes que tengan los ángeles los pueden cambiar, y descubrirlos y trabajar en ellos les permite tener un cierto control consciente sobre sus cambios.

What is it that you truly desire?

Lucifer Morningstar is the Devil, and he’s left Hell to take a vacation in Los Angeles five years before the beginning of the series, but he has no intention of returning to Hell ever. In Los Angeles he became the owner of a night club called Lux, and despite the club itself, he has a certain notoriety for granting favours in exchange for future devolution of them. Now, this version of the Devil doesn’t have anything near omniscience nor omnipotence: he, as a cast out angel, has the powers of the other angels in the series, which is super strength, high invulnerability, angel wings (except he had his cut off) and a unique ability, which in his case is to draw out peoples desires by simply asking them that when they have direct eye contact. Other than granting favours, all he does is partying all the time with music, alcohol and other drugs, and have sex with an enormous amount of women and men.

In the first chapter, a woman whom Lucifer had done a favour and liked a little was shot to death at his club entrance, and when the police arrives to investigate he meets for the first time with the coprotagonist, detective Chloe Decker. Now, desiring to punish the culprits, Lucifer sets out to investigate on his own the murder, and he crosses paths again with Chloe and convinces her to let him go along with her thanks to the information he had just acquired, but a very important thing happens in this second encounter, which is that Chloe is shown to be immune to Lucifer’s ability to draw out desires and to the general magnetism he has on people. This factor is what will make him insist in working with her in the next cases she has, and though at first reluctant, Lucifer’s ability comes very handy for interviewing suspects, besides his connections and out of the box thinking (due to not focusing much on the cases but on his own problems or having fun) so she ends up accepting his help and actually starts to enjoy working with him; so, Lucifer becomes a civilian consultant for the police, becoming Chloe’s partner.

Now then, the story has three main aspects: one it’s the crime solving one (usually murders); another is the celestial side of things: angels, demons, the very own God, of whom Lucifer and the other celestial are always wondering what is he thinking or intending to do; and the most important ones, which is the development of the relationships between the characters (Lucifer and Chloe’s love story is the most important) as well as self-improvement.

For this last one, there is a key factor which is Dr. Linda Martin, whom at the end of chapter one becomes Lucifer’s therapist. Through his sessions with her, Lucifer attempts to understand the changes he’s been going through lately, and (although usually he would take the exact wrong message from every single thing Linda says) this helps to propel the plot forward not only through Lucifer, but also through others that sometimes receive Linda’s advice whether formally or informally, chief among them being Mazikeen “Maze” Smith, a demon, and former best torturer of Hell.

Maze is Lucifer’s right hand and when she realizes that they are not leaving Los Angeles for a good time, she starts to see how she fits in some other way than just as Lucifer’s employee at Lux; thus, she attempts to get friends, and her first two are Trixie, the little daughter of Chloe, and the second is Linda. In the second season, Maze will begin to work as a bounty hunter ("Hunting humans is a job; who knew?"). Also Maze, due to her personality, is the character with the most ups and downs with the rest of them.

There’re a couple more of the main cast to speak of: from season 2 onwards is Ella Lopez, CSI, friend to everyone and on whom the religious question of believing in God despite lack of proof or understanding of why bad things happen is most centered; detective Daniel Espinoza, separated from Chloe at the beginning and later divorced, has a tense relationship with Lucifer and they become a sort of frenemies; and finally Amenadiel, God’s first warrior, tasked with bringing Lucifer back to Hell in first season, something at which he fails, ends up losing his angelic powers, and gets stranded on Earth with the humans he looks down on.

To conclude: this series has great humour and dramatic moments; it lacks a little in the celestial action scenes, but the action is not key to the series. And I go back to the self-improvement: all characters go through ups and downs, some very pronounced and long in time, but they eventually take responsibility for their own actions that caused them, and two things are related to that. First, that each person that goes to Hell is only there because of their own guilt; the prison cells doors are not even closed, and if anyone could surpass his guilty feelings, he’d be free (though Lucifer says in season two or three that no one ever achieved that, someone succeded in season five). And secondly, in season three Amenadiel and Lucifer learn that angels self-actualize their powers and even their looks: to not reveal much of it to those who have not seen the series yet, I’ll just mention Lucifer’s devil face (a traditional scary devil looking face, so to speak): it appeared after Lucifer was banished to Hell, but he learns that that happened because he saw himself as a monster. Like this, unconscious thoughts changes angels, and to unveil them and work them out if these are pernicious allows them to then obtain a certain degree of conscious control over their own changes.
