Many have recommended me to watch this film. But, always nothing.
However, this morning was not as usual, I watched it for the first time.

Dead Poets Society can be said to be a very Inspirational film. This film tells the story of a group of students who attend one of the elite schools in America, namely Welton Academy. This school is a school that is famous for its high discipline and adheres to the motto of tradition, honor, discipline and achievement.

This story starts from the story of the social life of seven students, namely: Neil, Todd, Knox, Charlie, Richard, Steven and Gerard who feel uncomfortable with the rules at their school.

Their thinking about science has changed after the arrival of a new teacher who will teach them English. The teacher was John Keating who was also an alumnus of Welton Academy.

When Keating started his first day of teaching, he asked one of the students to read the first page of Dr. Theory of Understanding Poetry. J. Evans Pritchard Ph. D, after that told him and other students to tear the page.
Keating also emphasized to his students how important it is to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in this day (now). He quotes from the poet Horatius' phrase: "Carpe Diem (Seize The Day)", which means "seize the opportunity". Unexpectedly, this became a new motto in the lives of his students, and even this changed their outlook on life.

Until one day Neil and his friends find old school records where it turns out that their English teacher, John Keating, once owned a secret club called the Dead Poets Society. A club whose members love to read poetry and always have different thoughts from others has inspired Neil and his friends to form a similar club. Gradually the thoughts of Neil and his friends opened wide thanks to Keating's teaching.

Watching Dead Poets Society invites us to see how rigid the learning system is in schools and how Keating releases the constraints that bind students' feelings. This can be seen in the scene where Keating invites all students to stand on the table to see the world from a different perspective because the universe is much wider than they have seen or thought so far. It can also be seen from the scene when Keating tells the students to tear off the first page of the book Understanding Poetry Theory.

I secretly laughed when I saw the scene of tearing the book. For a long time, I have agreed with what Keating said to the students that poetry cannot be measured by structure. As if this poem is a building. Without intending to judge everyone who enjoys writing or judging poetry, this is what most of us experience. Compose many poems; Of course, in order to attract many readers, but forget the essence of the poem itself, namely the song of the deepest soul. It's as if the poetry here is just an incarnation of the poet's existence.

This film is a strong critique of the orthodox thoughts of its time — perhaps even today or in the future. Freedom of thought is the jargon that John Keating always used to say. Do what you want. Seize your day. Carpe shut up. All the words that came out of Keating's mouth seemed to penetrate Neil and his friends. The power of the words of Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Shelley, Byron, and Frost which Keating recited in front of his students, gave them a new experience. What happened next was a transformation. The students who originally lived in order and fear, with poetry they came to know things that were more powerful and fun. They were carried away into the spell of words. They are no longer afraid to explore, discover their own dreams, goals, and personal uniqueness.

The conflict that becomes the most important point in this film lies in Neil, a student who is the smartest and knows that acting is his passion. However, he has a realist father who doesn't care about Neil's penchant for acting. Neil repeatedly begged for mercy from a father, but the results he got were still the same; His father's desire to reject all what he likes and focus on continuing his education to get a doctor's degree. This will also be a tragedy for Neil's friends, especially what will happen to John Keating.

From this, we can see that how great and detailed each parent is to manage a child's future, but it is not uncommon to ask what the child's will is. This film is here to make us realize how important the meaning of freedom of will is. Of course, it is not freedom that is sak karep e dewe, but the freedom to give birth to creative and innovative individuals, who are not eroded by the changing times and simply die. The Dead Poets Society also goes through Keating who says his students teach us that:

“We don't read and write poetry because it's sweet. We read and write poetry because we are part of the human race. And humanity is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering: these are noble jobs and are necessary for survival. But poetry, beauty, romance, love are useful for staying alive."
