In the labor market, the search for jobs by university graduates has been on the rise because many students are struggling to make the right decisions at the right time. One of the major causes of this is that many graduates lack awareness of what their employers are looking for.

Labor markets in recent times are highly competitive. So, it is important to equip yourself with the right skills as a graduate to remain relevant because, as industries and technology evolve, the demand for specific skill sets continues to change.

In today's post, I will be shedding some light on the critical skills needed in various fields and industries. Before going ahead, I'd love to invite @entity01, @kidi40, and @roselove to participate with us.

What do you understand about job skills?

source

From my own understanding, I define job skills as problem-solving skills. Job skills are those specific abilities required in a work environment to perform certain tasks. These skills are either “soft skills”, which comprise communication, teamwork, time management, and leadership, or “hard skills”, which include technical skills like coding for software developers, operating machinery for engineers, or financial analysis for accountants.

The more you develop your job skills and practice them regularly, the better you become at them, making you relevant in a constantly evolving labor market.

What is the importance of job skills in your country?

Nigeria is a country with a very high unemployment rate, and the job market is really competitive. Imagine having a unique job skill that is highly sought after; your chances of getting a job would be very high. In fact, with such job skills, you could choose to be your own boss by either becoming a consultant or setting up your own firm to train people, which is essential for Nigeria's future employment prospects.

Since the discovery of oil in Nigeria, the government has ignored other sectors of the economy. Everyone wants to work in oil companies. However, developing skills in other sectors, such as agriculture, technology, and mining, will likely drive innovation and advancement in those sectors. This will reduce reliance on oil, thereby contributing to the overall development of the country.

Skilled workers are never poor because, wherever they find themselves, they are highly productive and efficient. This contributes to the growth of any business in the country and also improves the standard of living.

Write about some skilled work in your country.

(my cousin at work)

  • Welding is one popular skilled job in Nigeria, and welders get paid well. They are highly sought after in construction companies for their skills. However, a negative impact of the job is that it affects their eyes in old age.

  • Graphic design is another skilled job people seek. In fact, their services are needed everywhere. Graphic designers are mostly freelancers or work on a contract basis. They design logos, flyers, banners, and school badges.

  • Online marketers are another set of people who have mastered the online space for selling products. They know the target market for every product and have mastered the skills of converting leads into loyal customers with mind-blowing offers.

  • Website design is another skilled job in high demand in the labor market. Businesses today no longer want to stress customers by having them come to the office for face-to-face dealings. They seek tech gurus who can design websites to display the goals, objectives, and vision of the company, including the products they sell with their prices. So, as a customer, if you want anything, you are just a click away. You pay, and the product is delivered to your doorstep, cutting off intermediaries and reducing paperwork for the company.

I want to know about your skills. An employer in your country may find you knowing this skill, so tell them about your skill.

I am a crane operator, although the machine I've been using is a manual crane. As a crane operator, my job is to move heavy equipment from one point to another and ensure the environment where the crane is operating is free from people.

As a crane operator, there are several lifting techniques you need to know before lifting a load from the ground to avoid accidents:

  • Assessing the load by knowing where the weight lies more, to lift it safely.

  • The rigger must be well-trained in knowing the right sling to use to secure the load.

  • Managing the swing to avoid oscillation.

  • Ensuring the outriggers are well-placed.

  • Knowing the load chart of your crane to understand the amount of tons the crane can lift to avoid tipping over.

  • Knowing hand signals very well.

  • Knowing how to respond to emergencies in case of mechanical failures.

Do you have some advice for Steemian friends to gain skills? Steemian friends can build skills by getting your suggestions.

The competition in the labor market is intense. Sometimes you see people with the best of result looking for jobs. But in order to standout, you must develop yourself either a soft or hard skills. Industries are evolving everyday. Now someone can be at the comfort of his sitting room in Nigeria and be working for someone in the USA. This is only possible because he/she has the required skills the world needs.

As the global economy becomes more interconnected, having a skilled workforce allows you to integrate into the global market. But you can’t benefit all this, if you don’t have a skill you call your own. I know it will definitely require time and money to get that required skill of your choice but I will advise you to pay that sacrifice and see your life turn around for good!!!

Cheers!!!
