Basic Knowledge In Agriculture #9
Hi!! Hi!! Hello everyone.
I hope you're all doing well today. It's nice to know I'm here for this wonderful educated post on knowledge of agriculture by @hive-118902. I must say, I've learnt about agriculture in interesting ways.
The mixture of water, elements, sediments, minerals, gases, organic matter, microorganisms, organisms is what constitutes a soil. Soil is essential for plant life and most life.
What are the different soil types and their characteristics?
Soil is a natural resources which forms on the surface of the earth which plays a role in filtering and storing water.Soil comes in various types ranging from sand, silt, clay, chalk and loam.
- Sand(sandy) soil: sandy soil has voluminous concentration of sandy particles as well as light growing medium. It's got a quick water drainage, it's easy for working on. It's soft and good for digging is its major characteristics. Due to easy water drainage through this soil, it's got low nutrients and drugs out when heated up.
The lower average pH of sandy soil makes it appropriate for planting roots of vegetables like carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips grow easily on this soil because of its loose texture and soil lightness.
Clay: This soil is actually the opposite of sandy soil, being that it's heavy and has poor drainage capabilities. Their particles are minuscule, the texture is firm and compacted easily thereby obstructing the pathway of water. They have high level of minerals and nutrients for some crops.
Silt: silt soil is fertile, soft and silk and has good density of nutrients for planting. This soil is not as compatible as clay soil, it lacks robust structure that can improve through roots of perennial crops. Most perennial crops are fertile on silt soil.
Loam: this is a balance soil that constitute of sand, clay and silt soil. It's known as the best kind of soil. It is the most desirable and fertile soil, it has good drainage, good structure nutrients are available. For crop rotation, this is the best soil. Most fruits and vegetables grow well since its composition is balanced.
Chalk: This soil has high concentration of calcium carbonate and good alkaline pH. It has large rocks and particles there by allowing good drainage.
Explain the agricultural importance of soil
Soil protect plants from chemical and biological activities and erosion.
It's a good source of minerals and nutrients for plants.
Roots are supported by good soil.
Between roots and the atmosphere soil provides a functions exchange.
Soil act as home to microorganism that decompose organic matter.
Soil holds large storage of carbon.
I would like to invite @josepha, @dove11 and @alamin19 to join this contest. Thank you.
