Basic Knowledge in Agriculture
Hello friend's
What are the different soil types and their characteristics (be elaborate) |
---|
The main types of soil are categorized by the size of their particle and the percentage of particles present, the three primary types of soil sand, slit, and clay. Other type of soil are based on the percentage of particles, such as loamy sand, sandy Clay, and slit clay, soil can also can also be classified by colour, such as red, black, or brown.
Sand; a coarse, loose soil made of small particles of weather rocks. Sand drain water easily and it soft and malleable for digging.
Silt; a fine sand with a smooth, slippery texture. Silt particles are easily compacted, which helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients.
Clay; a very fine grained soil with particles that are even smaller than silt. Clay does not drain well.
Loam; a combination of sand, silt, and clay that holds moisture but also drains well. Loam is generally easier to till than clay soils.
Peat: a very fertile soil made up of mostly organic matter. Peat soils retain a lot of moisture but rarely occur in garden.
Silty clay; an intermediary between sandy and clay soil that is more fertile than sandy soils. Silty soil have tendency to form a crust.
Forest soil; typically acidic soils with a shallow topsoil layer that are found in densely forested region and higher altitudes. These soil are not suitable.
Red soil; a soil that contains a mixture of clay and sand. Red soil is suitable for growing groundnut , pulses, millet, cotton, and tobacco.
Black soil; a soil formed from lava rocks that is rich in clay. Black soil is suitable for growing crops such as cotton, sugarcane, tobacco, wheat, millet, and oilseed.
Explain the agricultural important of soil? |
---|
Soil provides the structural support for plant used in agriculture and is also their source of water and nutrients. Soil vary greatly in their chemical and physical properties. Processes such as leaching, weathering and microbial activity combined to make a whole range of different soils types.
