Getting Started on Steemit- A Complete Guide for Newcomers
We are seeing a surge of newbies make their way to the steemit community, most of them made their way here with zero guidance from an existing steemain and hence are bound to get confused and eventually do the wrong things here. Proper guidance is necessary so they do the right things and grow fast in the steemit community.
In this article I will provide a detailed guide for newcomers who make their way here and in need of assistance, I believe this post will clear a lot of questions from the mind of many users who are still new to the platform.

Log-in
I have received a lot of questions from my recruits about how they can log in, and the long strand of letters used as the authentication system, and which one to use for everyday log-in?. Let's see how it works
Active key-Active key when necessary for transfers, power-ups.
Owner key-Master password or owner key when changing the password
Logging in with your owner key or your Active key is highly unnecessary because they hold more transaction-related permissions. The posting key is used for day-to-day log-in, making posts, and Voting. This is how you log in with your posting key.
Open https://steemit.com/ in your browser to get started.
After opening this page on your computer or mobile phone, click on the Log In icon denoted using a red marker.
Next step is the sign-up portal and your posting key is needed to continue.
Copy your posting key from your downloaded Pdf which you received at account creation.
Fill in your username and your posting key, the way it's shown in the image above.
After that click on Log-in.
Setting up your Account
After successfully signing in, the next step is to set up your account, how to upload cover images, and other account settings.
Immediately after signing in, an empty avatar will appear on the top right area of the page as shown in the image above.
Click on the empty avatar to open the memo as shown in the image above.
Click on profile to navigate to your page.
This is your blog page where your posts appear, you can also navigate around using the following portals like-Posts,Notification,Replies,Communities, wallets and Settings.
Click on Settings to make Profile and Account changes.
You can make changes to the following.
Click on upload image to upload your profile and cover images.
You can use the same format used by @whitestallion.
After making the changes, Click on Update to save changes.
You can also make your profile changes, you can update your preferences, this page can be found below public Account settings.
- Click on blog post rewards and set them to 100% power up.
This move will see all your post payout come as direct steempower. However, to leverage the price of SBD to earn more steem, users can select the 50% option and swap to steem and power up-This way they earn more steempower and faster while sacrificing their Trx rewards.
- Select your preferred options and leave the page, it updates automatically.
Making Your First Post as a Newbie
As a newbie, your first post should be your introduction post. Your introduction post or Achievement 1 is a post you make to introduce yourself to the steemit community. You basically have to write the basics about yourself, this post will be used to verify your identity.
You have to first subscribe to newcomers community https://steemit.com/trending/hive-172186 and post in the newcomers community.
- Subscribe and Post your achievement task on the newcomer's community.

It is important you complete your Achievement task to at least Achievement 4 for more understanding of the steemit blockchain.
Join an Active community
The steemit blockchain is nothing without its active communities bringing value to the blockchain. There are a lot of communities you can join as a newbie on the platform. The list below is a list of some of the most active communities on steemit.
