A TOUR OF VARIOUS FARMS IN THE NORTHEN PART OF GHANA TO SEE THE IMPACT OF THE DRY SEASON ON MINI FARMS

Hi guys,

Today I went round my community and paid a visit to some mini farms in my area to see the effect of the dry season on the farmers who live on this farms. It is unfortunate that in the Northern part of Ghana the effect of the dry season is felt more than any of the other regions because of the geographical area we are located in. Initially the plan was to go round these farms and look to see if I could get any of the farmers to talk to about how they manage to feed now that their main source of food is literally not functioning any longer but unfortunately the sun was too hot and I hardly met people outside.

So the first farm I passed by was a farm that had some live cows walking across it. Initially these animals stopped to look for feed but unfortunately the grasses were tooo dry for consumption hence they had to progress and move onto the next farm to see if they could get some feed. Even upon looking at the farm one will notice that the beds which were laid during the season of farming have been left untouched due to the dry season.

The next farm I visited had a slight difference from the first one even though they both had similar appearances. Unlike the first farm, the second farm had a lot of grasses but the grasses were useless grasses. As we can see from the image above the beds to this farm too are visible but we cant see any useful crop which has been planted by the farmer.

In this third image we can all see for ourselves that it is the house in the picture that benefits from the mini farm. In the wet season when I pass by this farm I see the farmer and the residents of the house working on the farm seriously just to make sure they are o get feed from it. As we can see this farm looks to be more worthless than the one that the farms could hardly get anything to eat from it. We say rubbish flooding the farm and the farm owners know they cant do much so they will have to look for other ways of securing food.

The last farm I went to makes me think that its not a farm at all. But honestly the beds can be seen but it can be noticed that time the farmer visited this farm will have been a long fear ago.

In the north the dry season has affected us in many ways. I believe the best possible solution would have been to use the irrigation system but out here the tap only get to open in like a weeks time and locks again so using irrigation is a bad idea and also since its the dry season most of the ponds and rivers are dry making it hard to practice irrigation.
