The Debate (no.48); Many ways to be smart

Hello Everyone, I am very happy @adi.syahreza to be able to greet all my friends again.

Standardized tests are learning techniques in the form of tests given by school institutions to test the academic abilities of students or college students. Also designed to measure student intelligence, but the effectiveness of this technique is still widely debated because many argue that this test cannot measure in detail the extent of intelligence possessed by students.

Do you think everyone has the same chance of succeeding in standardized tests? Why is that?

Basically, standardized tests are designed to measure students' abilities in a more precise way so that they aim to reflect the knowledge and skills they have, but students' chances of succeeding in this test are not only determined by academic ability but also other factors that support the development of student learning such as access to quality education, social and economic environmental conditions that affect the student's background. For example, students who have access to education in general find it easier to place themselves in the academic field, but this is different from students who have limited access to education.

In your opinion, how does a student's background or environment affect their test scores?

Background or environment greatly affects student performance in facing exams because students who come from good environments affect students' attitudes and also the students' thinking abilities themselves. For example, children who come from well-off families will have their educational needs met with books, technology, and various other media, unlike underprivileged children, they sometimes lack resources to learn or only rely on books.

Are there other ways to measure intelligence besides standardized tests? What are those methods?

As we know, every child has different intelligence and abilities. There are children who are academically intelligent (cognitive) but there are children who are smarter in terms of motor skills or better in terms of affective skills. As educators, these three things must be developed in children. Well, in terms of standardized tests, they only test students' academic abilities while other abilities are not. Other techniques that we can do to test students' abilities are such as project-based learning, and interviews between teachers and students with the aim of knowing their abilities because techniques like this teach students to collaborate and communicate with their friends, and can also assess their creativity and skills in solving problems.

In your opinion, can test anxiety affect student performance? How to?


Students' anxiety related to exams does affect their performance in answering questions because many students cannot focus because they are too afraid of their exam results, so they no longer focus on the questions that must be worked on, but if students no longer have anxiety about the exam, it can also have a negative impact because of course many students do not want to study because there is no emphasis on their anxiety in terms of exams, so anxiety in exams can have a positive or negative impact depending on the students themselves.

Can intelligence be defined in different ways, and how is it related to standardized tests?


Intelligence is a broad concept so it is not easy to define. In terms of standardized tests that are often tested are only forms of logistical or academic intelligence while the abilities possessed by students are very many and varied, there is even intelligence that cannot be measured through this standardized test, such as the ability to empathize, communicate with others, motor skills, namely being proficient in sports or various other abilities, while this standardized unit only focuses on academic intelligence.
