Blockchain fact: The concept of "proof of space" (or "proof of capacity") was initially proposed by a lesser-known blockchain researcher named Rafael Pass in a 2012 paper. Unlike "proof of work" or "proof of stake," which are more commonly discussed, proof of space uses storage capacity as a resource for securing the network. The idea is that instead of solving computational puzzles or holding cryptocurrency as collateral, miners demonstrate they have allocated a certain amount of disk space for the blockchain. This approach is considered more energy-efficient than traditional proof-of-work systems and has been explored in projects like Chia.
