Care of the elderly
online.maryville.edu
The elderly are very important group in the society. They are quite vulnerable just like children between the ages of 0-5 years and the preggies. In recent times, they make up an increasing population in our different communities.
What are the care required by the elderly
This can be divided into different categories which include:
- Physiological care
- Psychological care
- Spiritual care
Physiological care
This entails the care related to their physical health. It includes:
• Taking them to the hospitals when needed
• Providing home care services
• Keeping tabs on their medications.
• Ensuring the safety of their environment as they are prone to falls
• Providing medical assisted devices such as wheel chairs, clutches, smart clock which could help in their daily activities.
Psychological care
The elderly often feel independent and would likely not discuss their challenges with loved ones. To ensure effective psychological care, the following should be done:
• Visit them often and spend time with them
• They should be allowed to participate actively in the activities of their immediate environment. Disintegration from the society as a result of their advanced age often leads to depression for many
• Provide them with financial support.
• Ensure their is no form of abuse which could either be physical, emotional, financial or sexual.
• Avoid every form of negligence and abandonment. They still deserve some love afterall
Spiritual care

This entails connecting with their faith, hope and belief. The elderly believe this is a stage in their life where they have to build a closer relationship with the supernatural being.
To care for them spiritually, allow them to express their concerns, connect them with a clergyman when they request it and support them immensely in their faith.
Conclusion
Being an elderly is something everyone would wish for and hopefully would want an effective and efficient care from our loved ones and immediate environment at that time. Therefore, it is essential we play these roles we would want ourselves in the lives of the elderly around us.
