The use of images are a great way to make your post stand out as it makes it more attractive and draws users attention towards your blog. It helps readers to be able to visualize the content of your post as they have something to relate it to. In doing so, it is always great to use your own images.

However, many contents we may create may not have a personal image to link it to hence, we must outsource from other websites. There is a set of rules governing this act known as copyright laws and we must make sure we don't break/abuse them.

Copyright abuse is the use of a person's work/image/video without the permission of the owner. This has serious consequences and can result in lawsuits involving huge fines/imprisonment. As such, we must make sure to obey these laws at all times.

Here in our World Of Football Community, we encourage football related posts. However, most football images are not free and this has created some challenges in some of the posts we have seen. This post is therefore meant to guide all and sundry on how/where to obtain copyright-free images.

STEPS IN FINDING A COPYRIGHT FREE IMAGE ON GOOGLE

1)

  • Visit https://www.google.com/ and search for your player of interest. For the purpose of this tutorial, I am going to use "Virgil Van Dijk".

2)

  • The search results would then appear showing recent information about the footballer. Since our interest is in his images, click the images tab.

3)

  • Now we can see many of the player's latest images. Mind you, many of these images are protected by copyright laws and hence are not free to use. However, there are some images which are governed by creative common licenses. This means that the owners of such images have waived their rights for these images making them free to use. We must therefore use tools to filter out images with creative common licenses.

4)

  • Once in the tools area, there are a few steps you must follow.
  1. Click on "Usage Rights" for a drop-down menu.
  2. Select "Creative Commons Licenses".

5)

  • The newly displayed images are all governed by creative commons licenses.

6)

  • To cross-check that an image can be used for free, you should always check the license. This is done by clicking on the preferred image and opening the license details beneath it.

7)

  • Once the license details indicate free to use, modify, share and adapt, you can use it as you see fit.

Note : you should still cite your source below the image using this format. [source](insert the link to the image here) as well as the license like this [License details](link to the License).
