Hello everyone ,

I hope everyone is fine. I saw this post about cultural contest and couldn’t resist to share my culture with you all.

I am from gilgit baltistan which has an indigenous culture hidden from the eyes of fellow pakistanis.
With eased mobilisation , people from around the world visit gilgit baltistan to see its gigantic mountains including the world second largest mountain K2 and many more. Gilgit is full of adventures and mesmerising landscapes in-fact its a luxury escape to explore mother nature on budget.

In this post i will try to share insights of our culture.

This is a woollen cap for men. This cap is called khoi. The feather that this cap has is worn only on occasions like weddings and cultural shows. Its an important part of the groom’s attire.

This long woollen embroidered coat is called chugha. The chugha is given to the groom as a gift from his mother in law.

This is a cap with jewels for women. This cap has been used from centuries. It was to keep the hairs safe from dust and cold as there was no concept of dupattas or shawls in earlier times. The women then gradually added silver jewels to make it more beautiful. Almost every girl and women own one such cap.I wear this cap on my mehendi function .

These are called mantu or dumplings in other parts of the world. Mantu is favourite snack of our people and consumed at any time of the day as its easily available in every nook and corner. I would say its the same as you see samosas and pakorras in punjab everywhere.

Thanks a-lot. for taking interest and reading about our culture. Share your experience of gilgit baltistan if you have been there.
