Introduction

Unlike in the case of adults, when minors get involved in crimes, they are handled differently in the law court. Their case is handled specially. It is believed that minors who commit crimes are not very much aware of their actions and so their case is handled differently to save them the harsh realities of adult court and sentencing.

Juvenile Delinquency is a situation whereby a minor participates in unlawful behavior in the country even at his young age. The minor who does this is called the juvenile delinquent.

A juvenile delinquent is a person that is below 18 years of age and commits acts tht could be charged as a crime if he was an adult.
This act is usually very dangerous as it can lead to so many negative effects. Sometimes the causes are from the parents of those minors while at times too the minor decides to live such life for other reasons.

• Status offence

Status offence involves smoking/drinking excessive alcohol. These minors choose to abuse cigarettes and alcohol and this has led many of them into trouble. This type of behavior also affects the people around.

• Property crimes

This is a type of crime that juveniles get involved in which includes theft, burglary, shoplifting,, destruction of property.
They often do this to obtain money.

• Violent crimes

In this type of crime, the minor gets involved in violent behaviors such as bully, handling weapons, murder, rape, assassination, etc.

Types of juvenile delinquency

• Individual/single delinquency

In this type of delinquency, only one individual is involved in carrying out the juvenile crimes.

• Group supported delinquency

As the name implies, this type of delinquency is committed by a group of minors who support each other in their crime commission.

• Organised delinquency

This Type of delinquency is committed by organised group of young ones who decided to form their group in an organised way for the purpose of commiting juvenile crimes.

What are the causes?

Causes of juvenile delinquency

Family

Parents are responsible to train their children and to teach them good values. If they fail with this responsibility, it is very much likely that the kids will commit juvenile delinquency since they do not not know what is right from wrong.

Other things in the family that can cause juvenile delinquency includes:

• Broken homes
• Seperated families
• Frequent fights from parents
• Lack of trust and confidence among parents

School problems

When a juvenile (minor) misses lessons in school or misses school levels, they will not be able to reap the benefits of education and so they behave recklessly.

This also occurs when the child struggles to learn from school and no one is there to assist or discipline him.

Economic problems

Economic problems can also lead to Juvenile delinquency. When there is no food, clothing, or basic necessities of life, a minor can result to criminal activity to earn a good living.

Physical abuse at home

Abusing a child physically can lead to Juvenile delinquency. They learn this violent act and they act it out when they are away.

What are the consequences?

Consequencies of juvenile delinquency

• Loss of human life

Juvenile delinquency can lead to loss of the lives of many. When the Juvenile acts in violence or carries weapons, he may end up commiting murder. The murder in turn leads to arrest of the juvenile.

• Unemployment

It will be very difficult for a minor who is involved in delinquency to be employed due to his attitude.

• Loss of freedom
  The minor who behaves in such way may end up losing their freedoms both in the family and in the society. They are usually placed on probation or incarcerated.

• Juvenile delinquency leads to more poverty.

When these kids destroy people's homes and properties, they end up making them poor and causing more sufferings.

I can say that juvenile delinquency is prevalent among many young ones around the world.
Here in Nigeria they are seen and their work is to:

• Destroy lives and properties
• Cause problems for others
• Engage on sec and drug abuse
• Form cult groups
• E.t.c

Conclusion

Nothing good comes from being a juvenile Delinquent. It only leads to more trouble and so I advice that all kids should avoid this behavior.
Also, parents should always keep an eye on their children and to give them proper training so as to become better in the future.

The best training to give a child is one that is line with God's word. This way the child will be happy when he grows to be a good person and there won't be unnecessary damages in the society due to the child's attitude.
