Steemkids lessons: Addition and subtraction of decimals

A decimal number is a number which uses a decimal point followed by digits that shows values lesser than one.
       A decimal is divided into two parts by the point. The whole number or integer part and the fractional part.

Example:
85.4 is a decimal number.
85 is the whole number or integer while 4 is the fractional part less than one.

Example 2:
7.7174 is a decimal number. It is pronounced as seven point seven_ one _seven _four.

Changing decimals to fractions

The following are the steps to solve problems on changing decimals to fractions:
Step 1: Remove the decimal number and divide by ten, hundredth, thousandth, ten thousandths, etc.
N/b: if there is only one digit after the decimal point we divide by ten. If there are two digits we divide by hundredth and so on. We divide according to the number of the digits.
Examples:

Write the following decimals as fractions :
(a)3.20 (b)0.25
(c)7.29 (d)3.7

Solutions

3.20 = 3+0.20
since there are only 2 digits after the decimal point we remove the decimal point and divide by 100

Additions and subtractions of decimals

Decimal numbers can be added or subtracted if they are of the same decimal place.

Simplify the following:
(a)10.63 + 6.32
(b)14.354 + 23.201
(c)11.21 + 50 + 0.7
(d) 74.3 + 2.24

• 151.556 - 134.325
• 76 - 33.496
