Time for some Science Magic!
Hi kids!
I hope you had a great weekend.
I am sure that you don’t think we can perform magic through science. Well, today I am going to proof you wrong.
Ready for some magic?
I can remember when I was a little school girl and we had all these wonderful signs we made with our fingers to form our own “language” so that the boys could not understand what we were saying.
It feels like ages ago and I cannot remember one of these signs. However, one thing I can is how we wrote letters to each other with invisible ink.
Sit closer boys and girls as I am going to show you, in 5 easy steps, how you can write your own letters with invisible ink. We are going to do this magic through "science". We say we are going to do an "experiment" to proof that we can make or own invisible ink.
Now, lets first learn some word;
WORD | MEANING |
---|---|
Science | is what we use to find out more about the wonderful world we live in |
Experiment | is the method we use to find out more |
Laboratory | is the place where experiments happens |
In my “laboratory” I have my stepson, Divan helping us today. Yah, you saw his hoody. Just like all teenagers he loves his hoodies. :-)
What materials do you need?
- A Cup
- Tablespoon
- 15ml (or 3 teaspoons) lemon juice (fresh or bottled)
- 2 x cotton earbuds
- 1 x white A4 paper sheet
- A hot iron or a hot stove plate
What now?
🔸 Pour the lemon juice in a cup. You can use less lemon juice if you are not going to write a lot.
🔸 Soak the ends of the earbuds in the lemon juice.
🔸 Use the soaked earbuds and write your message on a plain white paper.
🔸 You won’t be able to see the writing in detail while the paper is wet so let the lemon juice message dry completely.
🔸 Once the lemon juice is dry you need to add heat to the paper. You can either “iron” the paper by placing a clean cloth between the hot and dry iron and the paper or you can hold the paper over a hot stove plate until the message appears.
Best, let your mom or dad help you.
Once you have applied the heat you will see that that the invisible ink messages can now be seen clearly.
Divan’s secret message to all of you
What happened?
What happens is that the message you have written discolours before the rest of the paper gets hot. Why?
Lemon juice and most fruit juice contains chemical substances or also known as carbon compounds . You cannot see these substances at room temperature. When you add heat it breaks down the substances and the carbon is released. Now this when “magic” happens.
When the carbon comes in contact with the air that we breath, oxygen, a process occurs which is called oxidation . The substance that you have use, in this case the lemon juice, turns light or dark brown. It can even turn black if it is left long enough to fully oxidize.
If you don’t have lemon or fruit juice you can also try do use the juice of an onion or vinegar. Clever!
Now it is time for you to share that secret with your best friend or even to draw a treasure map.

This is real magic science. I will love my @wizzyboy3 to try this out. We will soon post his own science magic. My best regards to my dear Devan. I have learned this magic science
I cannot wait to see what @wizzyboy3 is going to draw for us 😊
Divan says thank you and regards to you also. Schools starts tomorrow so he is not very happy
He will miss you all but it is for his own good. Tell him i love him so much. He should never mind, school will be over before he knows it
He says; "Sy is baie oulik" - "She is very nice" :-)
Hello @patjewell I have participated in this science magic though it burnt to still.
Though I did not get the picture well I hope us ok
Awh! Your photos didn’t come out.
Pls can you delete and load them again.
I would love to see your end result 😊
Ah! The photos are perfect on my computer :-) You did well!! Congrats!
Did you wait for the lemon juice to dry completely? If not it will "flow"and the writing will not be clear
Thanks for sharing to us informative and useful article....
This is super cool, I've never seen such creative science anywhere. Thank you so much for this, I liked it a lot.
And super easy and quick! 😊
Thank you for always reading and replying on my posts. I appreciate it 🍫
