What is marriage?

Marriage is a bond between two people that is intended to last a lifetime. It is a ceremony in which two people exchange vows, declaring their intention to remain together until death separates them. Marriage recognizes the love and commitment between two people and provides a legal framework for protecting that love. The definition of marriage varies from country to country, but generally it refers to a union between one man and one woman. In some religions, such as Islam, marriage may be an Islamic civil ceremony between two people who are not related by blood or some countries, marriage is only between a man and a woman. In Pakistan customs and traditions for marrying are very much impressed from Indian culture because Pakistanis and Indians have shared a long relation of around 1000 years together in Indian sub-continent. Indian culture has a very strong emphasis on the arranged marriage and once a couple is matched through an astrologer or some other means, it becomes virtually impossible to change their minds.

The process of engagement typically starts with either party approaching the other with an intention to marry. Engagement rings are not commonly worn in Pakistan as they are considered too expensive or symbolize too much wealth. Once the engagement is accepted, both parties will typically take a formal oath of marriage in a religious ceremony.
