Greetings to you dear kids,

I welcome all our lovely and intelligent kids to our class. Last week, we talked about meaning of marriage, steps to take before marriage and preconditions for marriage. It was an interesting class and a good jumber of you participate in the homework tasks. Your performance was impressive.
Today, we will be talking about formsnof marriage and the different types of marriage as well as reasons why people get married.

Forms of marriage

Three forms of marriage. These are traditional or customary marriage, religious marriage and Marriage ordinance or Court marriage.

Traditional/Customary marriage: This form of marriage is performed according to the traditions and Customs of a particular group of people. In this form of marriage, the man and the woman are joined together as husband and wife according to the traditional and customary laws. The marriage ceremony is usually performed by Elders of the new couple on the compound of the bride's family. Payment of Bride price, which is an important right, is done, after which the parents of both husband and wife approve their marriage.

Religious Marriage: This form of marriage conducted according to the religious doctrine of the people involved. This form of marriage can be classified into two. This are as follows:

i. Christian marriages: This form of marriage take place in the church. It is conducted according to the divine laws set forth in the holy scriptures (Bible).
During the marriage ceremony the Bride (wife) and the Groom (husband) exchange vows with each other to live together until death separate them.
The exchange of wedding rings as a symbol of their love takes place between the bride and the Groom. After taking the oath and signing of marriage certificate by the husband and wife a certificate of marriage is given to them.

ii. Islamic marriage: Islamic marriage is performed according to Islamic laws. Islamic marriage is also known as nakkhai. The marriage is conducted in a Mosque or at the house of the bride's family or a special value chosen for it. The Iman or learned Mallam conduct the ceremony according to the tenets of the holy quran and the hadith.
This form of marriage encourages a man to marry more than one wife provided the man can love them equally.

Ordinance/Court marriage: Ordinance or Court marriage is really takes place in the registry. This form of marriage is conducted by a magistrate, a senior local government official or a court registrar. During the marriage ceremony, the couple exchanged vows and wedding rings. They also collect a wedding certificate as proof of the Union. This form of marriage support a man with one wife still did separate them.

Types of Marriage

There are different types of marriage, some of them are as follows:

  1. Monogamy: This is the type of marriage we buy a man is married to only one wife at a time. This means that a man cannot marry another wife while he is still married. He can only married another wife after he has divorced or his wife is dead.

  2. Polygamy: This is the type of marriage by a man is married to more than one wife at a time. There are two types of polygamous marriage. These are: Polygyny and polyandry. Polygyny is when a man marries more than ine wife at a time. Polyandry is when a woman marries many husband at the same time.

  3. Levirate: This is the type of marriage in which the brother of a deceased man is under obligation to marry his brother's widow who is also under obligation to marriage her deceased husband's brother. This type of marriage often takes place in patrilineal societies where the immediate younger brother of the deceased husband is expected to inherit to the status, possession and responsibilities of his elder brother. In levirate marriage, the widow is still regarded as the dead man's wife.

  4. Ghost marriage: This is the type of marriage in which the unmarried younger brother of a deceased man marries and produces children in the name of his deceased brother. The woman he married is told and she accept that she is married to the dead person she perhaps never saw or knew.

  5. Endogamy: This is the system of marrying within a specific ethnic group, class, social group or family and rejecting others and such basis as being unsuitable. In some societies men and women are expected to marry from within the clan or lineage as the case may be. The practice of endogamy is often based on the keen desire of a group to maintain the purity of the group, conserve the group's property, wealth and maintain solidarity among the group.

  6. Exogamy: This type of marriage promits a man or a woman to marry outside their playing or tribal group. In exogamy society or groups marriage, between members of a group is prohibited.

Homework task

  1. List and explain the different forms of marriage.
  2. Interview your parents on the forms and types of marriage they do before becoming husband and wife. Write your findings.
  3. List and explain 5 types of marriage that you know.
  4. Mention 4 reasons qhy people get married

Beautiful lesson. This makes me wonder if polyandry is still in existence. It seems like a culture that might have gone extinct.
