There, their and they're are commonly confused words in the English language. They are classified as homophones because they sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. In this adventure, you will get to know what differentiates them and how to use them correctly in sentences.

There

The word "there" has about four functions. It can be used as a pronoun, adverb, adjective and interjection.

As a pronoun, "there" is used to introduce a sentence about someone or something that exists or happens.
Example:

• There was a country whose only problem was its leadership.
• There is always a way out of every challenge humans encounter daily.
• Is there ever going to be a way humans can live without conflict?

As an adjective, "there" creates emphasis.
Example:

• Would you like to sit over there by the window?

As an adverb, "there" can be used to refer to a location or place. It is the opposite of "here".
Example:

• He lives there with his friends.
• The family travelled to Dubai a few weeks before the industrial strike action. They have been there for the past three months.

"There" can also refer to a particular point in a series of events, speeches or stories.
Example:

• I'll stop there, does anyone have any questions?

As an interjection, "there" is used to get a person's attention when you are speaking to them.
Example:

• Hi, there! Welcome to today's show.

Their

It is a third-person possessive form of the pronoun ‘they’. It is a determiner used to indicate that something belongs to two or more people, animals or things.
See these sentences:

• The twins keep their rooms tidy always.
• Their performance during the Christmas carol left the crowd spellbound.
• Chemical fertilizers and their effects on the environment.

If you ever find yourself looking for a pronoun to use instead of 'his or her' when referring back to a word such as ‘everyone’, ‘someone’, or ‘anyone’, then "their" is a perfect word.
See these sentences:

• Everyone wants to live their life like royalty.

Some people consider this usage unacceptable. Finally, let's move on to the last word.

They're

This is the contracted form of "they are". Contractions are short forms of some words. Other contracted forms include you'd, they'll, he's, can't etc. These are not used in formal writing.

• They're friends with the Pope.
• They think that they're going the right way.
• They're buying a new boat tomorrow.
