Hoverfly on Beautiful White Flower
On the occasion of my first post in this community, I will share a macro image that I captured using a SAMSUNG-SM A52s smartphone camera. A hoverfly was on suck nectar from the white flowers while I put my camera with macro lens on it. This hoverfly has a broad, black body. It also has two wings that are transparent, its length is about 13-17 mm with the wings length about 10-15.5 mm. This species much found in Europe, and across the Palearctic to Japan. The hoverfly with Latin name, Volucella pellucens is usually found in woodlands and wooded hedgerows, but sometimes it also will enter gardens. These flies at first glance look like bees or wasps in shape and color. This then protects them from being preyed upon by birds and other insectivores who avoid eating wasps because of their sting. However, the difference between hoverflies and wasps or bees is that hoverflies have two wings, and Hymenoptera species have four wings.
