from one beach to another

And the tour continues. Crossing through Alentejo. Off to new beaches, see what we find.

General words to Alentejo

Alentejo is a place where time and space seem to merge and almost seem relative. One really takes the tempo out of it, especially if one gets in contact with the locals and inhales peace and cheerfulness.
Wide horizons that reach into infinity, colours and scents that spring from Mother Earth, especially in the morning or when night falls, which are intoxicating. When the dark night has unfolded, it is the optimal time to look at the sky and watch the stars.
Alentejo has a very special way of perceiving time and living it. This special way of dealing with time makes it possible to forget the hectic everyday life.

Praia do Malhao

The first beach we went to was the "Praia do Malhao", which is beautiful and extensive, it is located north of "Vila Nova de Milfontes". This beach is quite isolated and lies in the middle of the Sudoeste Alentejano National Park, which has protected this beautiful coastline from the development of expensive hotels etc.
The surrounding coast and the National Park "Parque Natural do Sudoeste" are well known and popular for walks and hikes. With built up paths and wooden trails, you can see and walk along the cliffs south of the beach, formed by the constant pounding of the Atlantic Ocean. Malhao beach is highly recommended for visitors looking for a secluded beach away from the crowds and for surfers who want to have their peace on the water.

To reach this beach you need a transport, like a car or at least a bicycle. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean here are good for bodyboarding or surfing, but you have to bring your own equipment, because there is no rental equipment nearby and beware, the currents can be very strong.

Vila Nova de Milfontes

Vila Nova de Milfontes is a beautiful town along the coast and offers visitors a wide range of cafes, restaurants, accommodation and shops, as well as sparkling beaches nearby. Milfontes is a tourist magnet especially in August, when the city is filled to capacity with surfers and sun worshippers (up to 50.000 people in the city). It is located in the middle of the beautiful "Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina" and is still a harbour, there are rumours that a Hannibal is said to have found shelter here, which is located on a sandy estuary.

The main beach in Vila Nova de Milfontes is where the sea flows into the Rio Mira. Separated areas of the river offer safe swimming, but you have to pay attention to strong currents. On the beach you can rent both kayaks and SUP boards.
Have you been there before? What did you do there and how did you like it?

de uma praia para outra

E o passeio continua. Atravessando o Alentejo.

Praia do Malhao

Praia do Malhao
