Last week I decided to make a Kitsune Mask out of cardboard and recycle material. I tried to document the step-by-step of that making process by taking pictures, but there are probably a few ones I skipped unconsciously.
First of all, let me tell you what a "Kitsune Mask" is: A "Kitsune" is a mythological fox from the Japanese folklore. It is said that kitsunes are shapeshifting creatures that can turn into any human form they want.
The Kitsune mask is widely used in Japan, and it represents the spirit of this mythical fox in Shintoism. It can be seen in popular anime series like Naruto, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Hotarubi no Mori e, etc.
The Making Process
First of all, I chose a common piece of cardboard. It doesn't matter how bad it is. As you can see, mine doesn't look very well. The important thing here is that you can use it as a base for your mask.
Secondly, I took an old mask of mine to use it as a pattern, since that mask already fits my face. You can simply draw the form of your face if you don't have a mask. I did this way cause I'm lazy.
Look at that, it doesn't have to look perfect, but remember to make it a little wider than your own face, because it has to bend.
In third place, I cut the form I just drew, and got my mask base.
Fourth step, I drew some lines on the base mask (I forgot to photograph that part), and proceeded to cut through those lines I drew.
Fifth step, I got some adhesive tape and started joining the parts I just had cut, so I could give the cardboard the hollow form I needed.
Sixth step, I designed and drew the Kitsune ears on another piece of cardboard making sure they had the desired form, and they fitted the mask (yup, I forgot to photograph the design); then proceeded to cut them.
Ok, the next step is very important and I almost forgot to document it.
This mask needs extra material in order to make the fox's snout. Without it, the mask would not look like a mask, but like a simple drawing on cardboard.
To do this, I used a piece of recyclable paper and made a ball with it. Then I used more adhesive tape to stick it to the cardboard.
Warning: It doesn't look any good at this point.
As you can see, I had cut the eye-balls at this point, too. I decided to make them before the mask was completed and not after, as it was done in the YouTube tutorial I watched, because my cutter wasn't as sharp as it should be and I was afraid I could ruin hours of effort by doing this at the end.
For the next step, I cut some stripes of recyclable magazine paper in order to make "paper mache" and stick it all over the mask.
With this step finished, this is how it looked. Yes, it seems to be a pig mask instead of a fox, haha
I did the same on both sides
Next step, stick more paper mache into the mask, so it gets harder
Now it is looking better, isn't it?
The next step should have been another layer of paper mache, but I skipped this part and went straight to the painting after reopening the eye-balls. Sorry, my anxiety won this battle.
I used common house painting for this.
Next -not documented- step: I cut the ornaments for the mask on purple crêpe paper, which was the color I chose for my mask, since I dislike the red color.
Now, all that remained was carefully sticking the ornaments into the mask.
Final step: After having all the pieces of ornament glued to the mask, I carefully drew the fox's nose and snout using cold paint, and voilà!
I had tons of fun doing this mask. It is likely that I make another one sooner or later :)

What a beautiful mask! I have seen the fox in anime, but I didn't know the name of it. Thanks for explaining what a Kitsune fox is apart from the process of making this mask.
