Again & Again: Super Idioot (Vollidiot)
Not all men are idiots, some are super idiots
Is Simon an idiot? Maybe when it comes to dealing with people and the statements he makes that partly remind me of Mr Bean with the difference that Bean knows how to amuse himself and Simon suffers from loneliness and is urgently looking for a girlfriend. It is unclear whether he really wants to get married or is just looking for something he has not had for a long time and is suffering from and especially when he meets friend Phil who seduces a beautiful girl within a few seconds and does have sex.
Simon is 29 years old, single and hates everything and everyone. The book starts with him walking into Ikea looking for a sofa for himself. At Ikea everything is geared towards family and coziness from living room to bedroom, something that bothers him and makes it even clearer that he is single.
His best friend gave him a book on how to live happily but this does not help him one step further because he has no goal of what to do with his life and finding a woman is also out of the question.
The job at T-mobile is also not what he wants because he is only confronted with stupid people. As the book progresses, not only does his drinking increase, but so do his debts.
After the holiday for singles, things go downhill. He tries to seduce the girl of his dreams with advice from his friend Paula. The great love turns out to be a nasty girl with a black heart acvording to his cleaning lady and from the moment he finds out she is at a concert, things go downhill.
Is it how stupid can you be or how unlucky can you be? There is plenty to laugh about if you are familiar with people and subjects and Ikea, but the attentive reader will definitely notice certain traits of Simon, notice how he changes his behaviour and ends up in a depression when the bailiff shows up, the ATM unlocks his card after the announcement that he is overdrawn by more than 10,000 euros, the police arrives to question him and he loses his job.
One thing is certain, Simon's life is far from boring and although he may come across as rude, he is also easy to intimidate and has real friends, even if he complains.
What's next? I love both, books and films but I go for the book! It leaves more room for one's fantasy but if there's a film better read the book first or you might be disappointed. A film made of a book is rarely the same.
If there's a book you like to share (not your own, the one you wrote), one you would read again, you can do so in a post. See here for the contest hosted by @sergeyk.
