STEP BY STEP DRAWING OF A WOODPECKER

• I started my drawing process with the beak of the woodpecker. I got the beak by drawing a cone shape, which I later on divided into two, and then I added a curve shape to it and a little fot making up the eye of the woodpecker.

• Then in my next step, I drew the side view of the bird or you can call it the back of the bird. After adding a curve which made up the head, I drew a long line from it which ended up being the tail of my bird.

2nd step

1st step

• My next step was drawing the belly of my woodpecker. This I got by drawing a curve from the beak down which ended in the tail. I also drew one of the legs.

• After adding the tail, I went further by designing the feathers, this I got by drawing letter 'u' and joining them together. I duf this in three places.

Step 4

Step 3

• My next step was drawing the tree I'm which the wood pecker was perching on. I got this tree by drawing two vertical lines and then another vertical line on top above the wood pecker which made up another branch, then I designed tree, by drawing rough part of the tree.

• My last step was adding finishing touch to my woodpecker. I used a touch of red and a little brown and my drawing was completed.

THE BIRD CALLED WOODPECKER

The woodpecker, also known as master carpenter of the bird world is a unique bird that is popularly known for pecking as the name suggests. It comes in different colours, from black, to white to yellow, sometimes with a touch of red on the head and belly. I have never seen a woodpecker. The male woodpecker has a red patch on its neck. The woodpecker is known for making homes. The bigger the woodpecker is, the bigger the hole it makes.

There are varieties of woodpeckers depending
on size, colour, habitat. Examples are:
• Sapsucker

• Acorn woodpecker

•Crimson backed woodpecker

• Pileated woodpecker, etc

HABITAT OF THE WOODPECKER

The woodpecker lives in mature forest, in suburbs with large trees, and even on dead and dying trees. They can be found in different parts of the world except for Australia and New Guinea. They are most abundant in South America and South East Asia. The woodpecker can build several nests without completing it before deciding to complete one and settle in it.

FEEDING

They feed on insects but can also feed on fruits and berries too and even sap from some trees. Some eat bird eggs and even small animals too. The woodpecker has a very long tongue, which comes with a sticky glue, this helps it grab insects even from far away. The woodpecker is not taken unaware by winter and therefore can not be stranded. It prepares for winter by locating a dead tree and it starts pecking on the tree, creating holes, then it gets acorns and stores it for future use.

Communication

They communicate by drumming on hollow wood, they are not social but prefer being alone. The male and female woodpecker live differently during winter, but only reunite in spring.

CHARACTERISTICS/UNIQUE QUALITIES OF THE WOODPECKER

• One would wonder if the pecking doesn't affect the brain of the woodpecker. The wood pecker has a unique brain that comes with built-in “shock absorbers” and plenty of brain fluid. This prevent damage to it's brain when it taps a tree. No matter how hard a wood can be, the woodpecker can peck and dig a big hole but it won't affect or damage it's brain because they have physical features that protects their brains.
The woodpecker can drum as mich as 20 times per second and the pecking is between 8,000 to 12,000 times a day.

• Not all woodpeckers peck wood. Sone survive in the ground by forming their nests through holes in the ground. They also feed on insects gotten from the ground.

IMPORTANCE TO MAN

Just like every other creation has its importance, the woodpecker has its own too.

• The woodpecker, by pecking insects and other tiny living things, controls pest, it stops the spread of pests that can harm trees and in this way, improves forest health.

• Woodpeckers have the ability to stop a mass infestation in trees. This is through feeding on insects. In this way, an ecological balance is kept or maintained.

• Woodpeckers provides home for different animals and birds like squirrels, bats, porcupines, etc because when they peck a hole and leave it, these animals will move into it.
