**Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 63:The Lies I Grew Up Believing

Growing up, my grandparents made me believe many things, some of them seemed as if they were taboos, "a must not, or you die affairs." But they were absolutely lies, so to say. Or should I say they were myths? You know, being a child you have to believe what elders or your parents say, but growing up, I realise some of them weren't as they said and that usually gets me laughing and feeling sorry about their ignorance.

• "These days, do you know some parents are just too careless? In my days, you dare not eat eggs. Egg, I'm serious. Do you know that if you give a child an egg, that child will become a thief? Honestly, that child will be stealing money to go and buy egg or steal the egg." That was what my grandma told me.

• I was also made to believe that if you eat beans, you'll grow taller. Here I am, as short as... I'm not sure if I am up to 5ft tall. It's not funny because we were told to always eat beans in order to be very tall.

• Then came another one that if a boy touches a girl, that the girl will be pregnant. Wow! It's not only me who heard this one o, we plenty. I just feel like laughing out! Is that the truth? No, but that was how much our parents could give us sex education, so, I don't blame them, that was how much they could try.

I actually realised that those were just mere words of threat to stop children from eating food or things that would make children want more. So, they felt telling them that would scare them from eating such, so that they would not be tempted to get it by either stealing it or just eating carelessly.
So, in order to prevent that, children were just stopped from eating those things and one of those was eggs.

Giving a child eggs doesn't make them become a thief anyway, rather it adds more nutritional value to the child. Of course, my children have been eating eggs on almost a daily basis, at least 5-6 times a week. That's because I know the importance of eggs to children and, so, I wouldn't deny them this because of some false statements.

On the other hand, eating beans to be tall was also some myths. As I realised that, I didn't let that bother me because that's not true. I laugh over those things whenever I remember them.

For where? I call a spade a spade. I naturally find it difficult to deceive people, so, I go straight to the point.

I teach Social Studies and some parts of Civic Education. When it comes to saying it the way it is, I make it real. My students will laugh or squeeze their faces. I'll make sure I tell them the positive and negative part of those things and why they should do or say the right things and not believe in some false statements.

To my children, I don't have to tell them lies in order to avoid mistakes in the future, because what you tell them is what will stick to their minds. It may be difficult to change or correct the wrong thoughts once they stick to the brain, and peradventure becomes a way of life. It is better to hit the nail on the earth than beat about the bush.
