INTRODUCTION

Hello wonderful people from steem4nigeria! Season's greetings from me to you and happy new year in advance. Hope you're enjoying every bit of this yuletide season. It's another opportunity to draw again. Thank you, @benton3 for this contest. I am here to draw a porcupine and also tell you some interesting facts about this animal. Come with me, let's start.

My Steps in Drawing a Porcupine

It took a lot of stress and steps before I arrived at this drawing.

Step 1: The very first step I took was to gather my drawing tools as usual: pencil, black pen, eraser, sharpener, crayons, and a plane drawing paper.

My drawing items ready

Step 2: The next step I took was to start drawing. I started from the head of the animal. I drew the head from right to the left. I included the dark nose, two short legs and the lower abdomen.

A sketch.

Step 3: I now started inserting the spines, one after the other, the eyes, ear, and also darkened the small legs with crayon. This gave me a picture of a porcupine.

Guills inserted with eyes, ear, and dark legs.

Step 4: In the next step which was the final step, I took time to colour the animal with crayons to give me a grayish-brown specie of porcupine.

Finishing

Porcupines

Porcupines are animals from rodent family, that feed largely on herbs with their bodies covered with pines or quills. These animals are of different species depending on geographical location. They come in different colours like grayish brown, dark brown with a little touch of white or black due to bands on the quills.

Feeding

Porcupine feeds on underground parts of plants, fallen fruts, barks of trees, root of plants like tubers of yams or cassava underground.

Have you seen one?

Yes, of course, I have seen one. I saw one when I was in my secondary school. My late father was a local hunter who used to hunt animals with a local gun back then. Once, he hunted porcupine. We were amazed to see this kind of animal with its body, all covered with sharp spines.

Is it edible in your country?

Yes, it's edible in my locality. We call it bush meat. It is very nice and proteinous in nature. It is very expensive to buy it now because it is rare to fine due to deforestation and bush clearing for agriculture. Bar operators seek for this animal which is commonly found in the rural areas.

What are its characteristics?

*Porcupines are naturally a land animal although some live on trees as a result of geographical location.

*An average short porcupine can weight up to 30kg.

*They look like rats.

*Some species of porcupine eat in the night and then rest in the day.

*Gestation period ranges between 100 to 200 days.

*They have short, stocky legs with long curved claws.

What makes it unique?

*Porcupine uses it sharp spines for defense and protection against enemies.

*The striking of the quills against each other makes a sound to attract female or male for courtship.

*Porcupine eat both at the tree top and on land . This makes the animal both terrestrial and arboreal.

Thank you for reading through my post. Have a nice moment and enjoy yourself.
