Celebrating Human Rights Day (December 10); The When, Why and What we can do.
As we celebrate Human Rights Day today worldwide, do you really know what today December 10th is all about or you just go by wishing each other happy Human Rights Day? Well let's educate ourselves on this, shall we?
What are Human Rights and Human Rights Day?
Human rights are known as the basic freedoms and protections that every single human being is entitled to enjoy for just being human, and they are meant to ensure that everyone live with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs. Some of these rights include;
Right to Life:
Everyone has the right to live and not be harmed.
Right to Freedom of Speech:
People can express their opinions without fear of punishment.
Right to Equality:
Everyone should be treated equally, regardless of their race, gender, or background.
Right to Education:
Everyone has the right to access education and learn.
Freedom of Religion:
People can practice their religion or belief freely.
Right to Privacy:
Everyone of us has the right to keep our personal life private, and be free from unwarranted interference by anyone and even from the government. And many more!
Problems of Human Rights Today
As lovely as the name human rights sounds, is it everyone of us who gets to enjoy these rights? Well, you and I know very well this is not true. So why is that? Well here are some major human rights issues that we face today;
Discrimination:
Many people experience unfair treatment based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion, which is not supposed to be so as every human is created equal.
Restricted Freedom of Expression:
In some countries, people are not allowed to speak their minds or criticize the government without fear of punishment.
No Access to Education:
Not everyone has the opportunity to go to school, especially girls in certain regions because they feel a lady is meant to be a house wife only.
Poverty:
Many people live in extreme poverty worldwide , therefore lacking access to basic needs like food, clean water, and healthcare.
Refugee Crisis:
Millions of people in the world right now are forced to leave their homes due to war, violence, or persecution, leaving them to face dangerous conditions and uncertainty.
Police Brutality:
Individuals face violence or abuse from law enforcement agents all over the world, often due their identity or background. Whereas in some cases, these agents feels they are above the law themselves.
Why Do We Have A Human Rights Day?
So then, how do we close the gap between those who enjoys all these rights and those who don't? Well that brings us to why we have the topic of today, the Human Rights Day.
Human Rights Day is a day set out to promote and celebrate human rights worldwide, and it is celebrated on the 10th day of December every year to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948.
This day was picked and set out so people around the world can raise awareness about human rights issues, reflect on the progress made, and also have the room to advocate for those whose rights are still being violated.
Therefore, the significance of Human Rights Day, December 10th lies in its role as a reminder of the importance of protecting and promoting the rights of all people all over the world notwithstanding their background, culture or social status as it helps raise awareness about human rights issues and encourages every individual and organizations to take action against injustice.
How Can We Get Involved?
This fight is not just for a person or agency alone but everyone of us. So then, how can we all be involved in this fight? well every one of us can get involved in human rights in the following simple ways:
Educate Ourself:
We all need to educate ourselves and learn about human rights and the human rights issues in our community and around the world. Because by understanding these problems, it sets the first step to making a difference.
Speak Up:
We should learn to speak up by sharing what we know with our friends and family, so we can use our voices to raise awareness about human rights issues that matter to us.
Volunteer:
If there are chances, we can join up with local organizations that focus on human rights work to help out. Our help can be a big impact.
Support Campaigns:
Participate in or donate to campaigns that promote human rights. We can achieve this by signing petitions or supporting human rights groups.
Advocate for Change:
Be ready to contact our local leaders and representatives to express our views on human rights issues and let them know what changes we want to see.
By taking these steps, we all get to play our part and can contribute to the fight for human rights and help create a more just world.
NOTE: Always have a smile on your face, as you are never fully dressed without one.
